Role Description
This role involves working as a Knowledge Engineer – Ontologist with a focus on RDF, OWL, ontology design, and tools like Protégé.
- Leading workshops to explore ontological domains and concepts.
- Providing leadership and expertise on areas of biology, chemistry, and clinical trials.
- Modelling concepts and relationships between concepts in areas of biology, chemistry, and clinical trials.
- Working closely with scientists, researchers, and other subject matter experts to clarify concepts.
- Comparing ontology to existing standard/published ontologies and aligning where possible.
- Creating core and domain ontologies, leveraging upper ontologies where possible.
- Utilizing tools such as Protégé to design and build ontologies in OWL format following best practice patterns.
- Creating ontology inference rules.
- Creating SHACL shapes for validation.
- Creating SPARQL queries to answer competency questions based on the built ontology.
- Working with data architects and engineers to map ontology concepts to data for ingestion into a knowledge graph and advising on integration of different data sources.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience as a Knowledge Engineer – Ontologist.
- Hands-on experience in RDF, OWL, ontology design, and tools like Protégé.
- Strong domain understanding in F&B R&D/biochemistry.
Requirements
- Experience working with RDF and OWL, including logical & reasoning terminology: IRIs, triples, classes, properties, restrictions, equivalence, disjointness, etc.
- Experience working with ontology in a tool such as Protégé and understanding typical ontology design patterns, architecture, workflow, versioning, etc.
- Semantic modelling experience including considerations around data integration, mapping/alignment to other ontologies.
- Requirement elicitation, communication & workshopping skills.
- Domain background in the domain being modeled (in this case F&B R&D, so biochemistry).
