Role Description

The purpose of this internship is to apply AI and large language models to modernize and enhance efficiency in biostatistics and statistical programming workflows. The intern will explore opportunities for automation and innovation across key areas such as:

  • TLF quality review
  • CDISC mapping
  • Clinical graphics engine
  • Biostats report generation

This role ultimately aims to advance the integration of emerging technologies into core biostatistical and statistical programming operations.

Work Model: Remote - Officially documented as working full-time from home, with travel to Ultragenyx's offices or other locations on occasion as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply AI and large language models to enhance efficiency and quality within biostatistics and statistical programming workflows.
  • Support development of AI-assisted tools for TLF quality review, including automated checks, annotations, or validation aids.
  • Contribute to building an AI-enabled CDISC mapping tool to streamline dataset standardization.
  • Assist in creating automated clinical graphics solutions that leverage LLMs or generative AI for quicker and more consistent visualization outputs.
  • Participate in developing AI-based report generation workflows to improve speed and consistency of clinical study outputs.
  • Prototype, evaluate, and document emerging AI/ML methods relevant to statistical programming tasks.
  • Collaborate with biostatisticians and programmers to gather requirements, test solutions, and integrate prototypes into existing workflows.
  • Present findings, prototypes, and recommendations to the biostatistics and programming leadership team.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s or PhD degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python is a must, including experience with data manipulation, automation, or AI/ML workflows.
  • Experience with programming languages commonly used in biostatistics such as SAS or R, and familiarity with development environments like Visual Studio Code.
  • Exposure to AI/ML concepts, large language models, or natural language processing—through coursework, projects, or research.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with interest in applying emerging technologies to real-world scientific workflows.

Requirements

  • U.S. Hourly Wage Range: $30.00-$40.00 per hour.
  • The estimated hourly range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on the candidate’s education level.
  • This position is eligible for annual bonus and equity incentives. Actual individual pay is determined by demonstrated experience and internal equity alignment.
