Job Overview
We’re seeking an experienced Epic Systems Database Administrator to own the reliability, performance, security, and lifecycle management of our Epic Cogito (analytics), Clarity (reporting), and Caboodle (enterprise data warehouse) platforms. You’ll be the go?to expert for database architecture, optimization, upgrades, and issue resolution—partnering closely with Epic application teams, reporting/BI developers, and infrastructure/security stakeholders to deliver high?quality, compliant analytics at scale.

What You’ll Do

Platform Administration & Reliability

  • Administer and support Epic Clarity (operational reporting database), Cogito (analytics framework including SlicerDicer), and Caboodle (EDW) environments—primarily on Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Configure and maintain HA/DR (e.g., SQL Server Always On AGs, failover clustering, log shipping) and routinely test backup/restore and disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Monitor capacity, jobs, ETL schedules, and platform health; triage and resolve performance incidents and failed jobs.
  • Support Epic-delivered Clarity ETL processes and Caboodle load frameworks; coordinate refresh windows and data latency expectations.
  • Develop, maintain, and harden SSIS/SQL Agent packages, stored procedures, and job orchestration supporting reporting and analytics.

Performance & Optimization

  • Analyze query plans, tune SQL, add/adjust indexing strategies, and optimize ETL loads for Clarity & Caboodle.
  • Proactively identify hotspots (I/O, CPU, memory), refine resource allocation, and implement performance baselines and SLOs.

Security, Compliance & Auditing

  • Implement least-privilege access models, manage logins/roles, and enforce encryption (at rest and in transit).
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance; support auditing, PHI/PII controls, and respond to security assessments.
  • Coordinate with InfoSec on vulnerability remediation, patching cadence, and configuration hardening.

Upgrades & Lifecycle Management

  • Plan and execute Epic version upgrades and related database schema changes; maintain environment parity across dev/test/prod.
  • Apply OS/SQL Server patches, cumulative updates, and firmware/driver updates with minimal downtime.
  • Document configurations, runbooks, and operational SOPs; contribute to change management and CAB processes.

Collaboration & Support

  • Partner with application analysts, report writers, and data engineers to troubleshoot data issues, validate models, and refine performance.
  • Provide on-call rotation coverage for critical incidents; offer mentorship to junior DBAs and analysts.
  • Participate in new solution design—capacity planning, data modeling considerations, and infrastructure sizing.

 Qualifications & Skills

Core Epic & Data Platform Expertise

  • 5+ years administering Epic Clarity/Cogito/Caboodle or similar healthcare analytics platforms.
  • Deep experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2016+): database design, indexing, partitioning, query tuning, and performance troubleshooting (DMVs, wait stats, query store).
  • Hands-on with SQL Server HA/DR: Always On Availability Groups, clustering, backups/restores, log shipping, and DR exercises.
  • Knowledge of Caboodle data models and load frameworks
  • Familiarity with Reporting Workbench and/or SlicerDicer
  • Experience supporting Epic Clarity ETL cycles, refresh windows, and downstream reporting dependencies.
  • Proven enforcement of HIPAA compliance, PHI/PII handling, audit logging, encryption, and role-based access control.
  • Familiarity with enterprise change management, ITIL practices, and regulated environment controls.
  • Proficient with monitoring/observability (e.g., SQL Server native tools, SCOM, SolarWinds/DPA, Redgate, or equivalent).
  • Strong documentation and communication skills; comfort collaborating across clinical, technical, and leadership teams.
  • On call support experience, incident triage, and root-cause analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic Certifications/Proficiencies: Cogito, Clarity Data Model, Caboodle.
  • Working knowledge of Epic Chronicles/IRIS concepts.
  • Exposure to Azure or AWS RDS for SQL workloads.
  • Scripting automation with PowerShell or other scripting languages
