Position Purpose:
The Senior Engineer – Certificates & Load Balancing is responsible for ensuring the stability, security, and reliability of enterprise certificate services and Citrix NetScaler load balancing environments. This role exists to prevent certificate-related outages, strengthen operational governance, and provide senior-level technical support for SSL/TLS and application delivery services. The position bridges network, security, and application teams to deliver predictable certificate lifecycle management and resilient load-balanced platforms, shifting the organization from reactive issue response to proactive service assurance.
Certificate Operations:
- Monitoring certificate expiration alerts and proactively engaging application teams
- Issuing, renewing, and validating certificates (internal and external)
- Troubleshooting SSL/TLS handshake failures, certificate chain issues, or trust errors
- Reviewing CSRs for accuracy (SANs, key sizes, usage types, etc.)
- Validating successful certificate binding post-change (browser, OpenSSL, CLI validation)
- Investigating certificate-related incidents or production escalations
NetScaler / Load Balancer Support:
- Installing and binding certificates to NetScaler virtual servers (VLSB)
- Managing GSLB configurations and SSL profiles
- Updating SNIPs, VIPs, service groups, and monitors as needed
- Supporting load balancer changes during maintenance windows
- Troubleshooting Layer 4–7 connectivity or persistence issues
Operational Governance & Improvement:
- Participating in change management and validation processes
- Running reports or dashboards on expiring certificates and compliance posture
- Partnering with application teams to improve certificate hygiene and ownership
- Documenting repeatable procedures and improving runbooks
- Identifying automation opportunities to reduce manual certificate work
Escalation & Advisory:
- Acting as an escalation point for complex SSL or load balancing issues
- Advising teams on certificate standards, cipher policies, and secure configurations
- Supporting audits or security reviews related to encryption and PKI
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Complies with all policies and standards
Education/Experience:
A Bachelor's degree in a quantitative or business field (e.g., statistics, mathematics, engineering, computer science) and Requires 4 – 6 years of related experience.
Or equivalent experience acquired through accomplishments of applicable knowledge, duties, scope and skill reflective of the level of this position.
Technical Skills:
- Certificate Lifecycle Management (PKI / SSL / TLS) - Deep understanding of certificate issuance, renewal, replacement, revocation, and validation across enterprise environments.
- Citrix NetScaler / ADC Expertise - Hands-on experience supporting and troubleshooting NetScaler environments, including GSLB, VLSB (vServers), SNIPs, VIPs, service groups, and SSL profiles.
- SSL/TLS Configuration & Troubleshooting - Ability to diagnose certificate chain issues, cipher mismatches, handshake failures, and trust problems across load balancers, web servers, and applications.
- Load Balancing & Application Delivery Concepts - Strong grasp of Layer 4–7 traffic flow, health monitoring, persistence, and high-availability design.
- Operational Support & Change Management - Experience supporting production environments, participating in maintenance windows, and validating changes with minimal service impact.
- Automation & Tooling (Preferred) - Familiarity with scripting, APIs, or automation frameworks to support certificate workflows, reporting, or operational efficiency.
