Role Description

The Blue Star Claims Internship Program is designed to provide students and early-career professionals with hands-on experience in claims operations, administrative support, and data management within a professional insurance services environment. Interns will gain practical exposure to claims administration, intake processes, and clerical operations while supporting Blue Star’s mission of delivering efficient and accurate claims services.

This program emphasizes cross-departmental learning and real-world skill development, while ensuring that operational coverage and workflow continuity are maintained across Claims Operations. Interns will work under supervision and alongside Adjusters, Claims Assistants, Intake Coordinators, Data Entry Specialists, and Administrative Assistants.

Program Goals

  • Develop professional skills in claims operations, administration, and customer communication
  • Gain experience with Blue Star’s proprietary claims management systems and workflows
  • Understand compliance and confidentiality requirements in claims handling
  • Build teamwork, organizational, and time-management skills within a fast-paced insurance operations environment
  • Prepare for potential career opportunities within Blue Star or the broader insurance and claims industry

  • Minimum Age: 16 years or older at time of application
  • Resume Required: Current resume must be submitted
  • “About Me” Statement or Cover Letter: A brief statement outlining career interests, goals, and reasons for applying

Requirements

  • Interns are expected to adhere to a fixed weekly schedule, with designated days and hours maintained consistently
  • Must be an internal referral - applicant must be referred by a current Blue Star employee
  • The referring employee must agree to serve as a mentor and resource for the intern if selected
  • Mentor will not serve as a trainer or supervisor, but be available for guidance and support

Technology Requirements

  • Equipment: Interns may choose one of the following equipment options:
    • Company-Provided Option: Blue Star will provide a Mac Mini. Interns selecting this option must supply their own two monitors and maintain a reliable internet connection.
    • Personal Device Option: Interns may use their own personal computer with a second screen. Interns who choose this option must sign a Personal Device Use Waiver prior to beginning work. If the intern is under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian signature may also be required.
  • Reliable internet connection required

Compensation

  • Hourly Pay: Compensation adheres to the minimum wage standards set by the state

Work Schedule & Hours

  • Weekly Hours: 15–29 hours per week
  • Schedule flexibility to accommodate school or personal commitments, subject to management approval
  • Intern time off (Vacation & Sick Combined): 2 hours per pay period
  • Time off may be used for illness, appointments, or planned absences following Blue Star policy
  • Internship Duration: The internship is structured for a 12-week period. Completion of the internship does not guarantee continued employment

Intern – Claims Processing Support

The Claims Processing Support Intern is responsible for providing administrative, clerical, data entry, and intake support across claims operations and services. This position is designed to provide adequate coverage for our intake, admin, data entry, and support staff during extended PTO, medical leave, or other approved absences.

The Intern will work together as a team with Intake Coordinators, Data Entry Specialists, Claims Assistants, and Administrative Assistants to ensure continuity of operations. The Intern will be assigned to cover desks as needed and is expected to maintain workflow standards consistent with department expectations.

The Intern reports to the COO, VP of Operations and/or assigned Supervisor.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Provide comprehensive desk coverage during extended PTO, medical leave, or as otherwise necessary to ensure continuity of operations and adherence to workflow standards and departmental expectations
  • Cover and support the following roles as assigned:
    • Data Entry Specialist
    • Administrative Assistant
    • Intake Coordinator
    • Claims Assistant
  • Tracking incoming and outgoing mail, checks, and returned mail
  • Assisting with internal shared inboxes as assigned
  • Scanning, Labeling, linking, and uploading documents into claim files
  • Linking incoming fax and mail scans to appropriate claims
  • Downloading and documenting reports
  • Charging files for outgoing mail expenses
  • Uploading urgent documents as requested
  • Assisting with incoming calls and emails
  • Conducting intake interviews as assigned
  • Creating incidents and claims in the claims management system
  • Bill Review $5K and under
  • Gathering work status and medical documentation
  • Sending letters
  • Documenting records
  • Requesting and verifying coverage following established protocols
  • Sending claim forms and assisting with claim assignments
  • Perform other duties as assigned
