The Opportunity

We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and scale the distributed systems that power our real-time AI voice agent platform. You'll architect and implement the core backend infrastructure—microservices, APIs, databases, and message queues—that enables healthcare organizations to deploy AI agents at scale.

This role focuses on creating scalable, reliable backend systems that support complex healthcare workflows while maintaining HIPAA compliance and integration with electronic health record (EHR) systems. Given our work with sensitive patient data and critical healthcare workflows, we're looking for engineers who are passionate about quality, reliability, and making a meaningful impact on healthcare accessibility.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement high-performance, scalable Python microservices and APIs that support our real-time AI agent framework

• Build resilient distributed systems that maintain high availability and low latency at scale, supporting tens of thousands of concurrent connections

• Architect robust data storage solutions across SQL, NoSQL, in-memory stores (Redis), and blob storage, understanding when to use each and how to orchestrate them

• Implement message queuing systems and event-driven architectures for reliable inter-service communication

• Build and maintain integrations with Epic EHR and other healthcare systems

• Ensure HIPAA compliance and security in all system designs

• Create monitoring and observability systems to ensure platform reliability

• Take end-to-end ownership of backend features from design through deployment

• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams through technical discussions and code reviews

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience building scalable, distributed systems

• Strong system design skills with demonstrated ability to architect solutions from scratch

• Experience integrating with external systems and third-party APIs

• Track record of independently owning and delivering complex technical projects

• Comfort with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor) for enhanced productivity

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with real-time, low-latency distributed systems at scale

• Background in healthcare technology or regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2)

• EHR integrations (Epic, Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks) and healthcare system APIs

• Telephony systems or voice infrastructure
