Role Description

The purpose of this position is to introduce the interns to state and federal wildlife protection policy (i.e. laws and regulations addressing wildlife), and to the animal protection and environmental protection fields. Learn about and develop the skills and tools necessary to effectively advocate for wild animals through outreach, education, and policy.

The dates of the internship are May 26, 2026-August 24, 2026, working approximately 20 hours per week.

You will be responsible for:

  • Research, compile, and draft campaign materials such as reports, memos, factsheets, letters to governmental bodies, letters-to-the-editor, social media materials, or databases on laws or scientific data;
  • Read and draft wildlife-related media and educational materials;
  • Analyze and draft informational documents relating to data, public records, and policies;
  • Independent project (may be optional based on program needs);
  • Support legislative and regulatory campaigns through additional activities such as phone banking and attending hearings when possible;
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and webinars;
  • Provide weekly updates on work progress.

Qualifications

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university;
    • High school or accredited college or university graduate who graduated within the last two years and has completed some university-level coursework;
    • Service member with an honorable discharge within two years of leaving the military.
  • Strong interest in wildlife protection issues in the United States;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and fluency in English;
  • Strong critical thinking skills;
  • Strong research, writing, problem-solving, and time management skills;
  • Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to changing priorities, willingness to take initiative on a variety of projects, and have a strong work ethic;
  • Ability to use discretion, keeping in mind the confidential nature of some aspects of the work;
  • Ability to work independently with moderate levels of direct supervision;
  • Must work well as a member of a team, with a high level of accountability, integrity, and good judgment;
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mission and values;
  • Ability to learn, retain, and relay information relating to the organization;
  • Ability to inform others about the issues we work on, our positions, and our goals;
  • Eagerness to learn from and work closely with supervisor and wildlife department staff;
  • Able to follow guidelines and policies of Humane World as well as directions given by staff;
  • Able to tolerate learning about wildlife abuse issues and potentially viewing images of abuse.
