Role Description

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is seeking a Managing Director to join our Program Management Office (PMO). The Managing Director has overall responsibility for a portfolio of 5+ initiatives within the PMO. The PMO elevates all project work focusing on efficiency, effectiveness, and collaboration of all project teams. Managing Director is responsible for executive-level communication and alignment, internal and partner relationships, strategy, and outcomes attainment.

Reporting to Senior Vice President, PMO, this individual will guide budget management, initiative resourcing, and program deliverable strategies while promoting consistency in best practices across projects and portfolios. The Managing Director ensures strategic alignment and effective program delivery, and fostering collaboration across teams. The Managing Director has responsibility to support expansion of contracts and the proposal of new ADA initiatives. The Managing Director will supervise, lead, and mentor Program Directors, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and Project Coordinators.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership for delivering large-scale initiatives that improve the lives of people living with diabetes.
  • Guides cross-functional Association and partner teams to achieve exceptional, timely and cost-effective project execution that surpasses stakeholder and partner expectations, meeting or exceeding all specified outcomes.
  • Leads programs that involve multiple stakeholders and funders including external executives, ADA departments and senior leadership, volunteer leaders, field operations, members, and other constituents.
  • Holds accountability for the successful completion of project deliverables, ensuring project outcomes support contract renewals and growth of existing and future projects under their leadership (if applicable).
  • Guides initiative budget management including key decisions related to confirming financial goals and providing direction on staff resourcing based on budgets and overall initiative budget health.
  • Provides executive-level guidance translating initiative proposals, statements of work, into clear, actionable implementation plans, ensuring alignment across scope, timelines, resources, budgets and success measures.
  • Supports ADA in identifying new opportunities for initiatives that advance ADA’s strategic mission and revenue objectives in collaboration with partner organizations.
  • Champions process documentation including developing new and maintaining existing policy documents, and driving continuous improvement in ADA’s project management practices.
  • Conducts training and coaching in project management for team members and cross-functional colleagues.
  • Fosters collaboration, negotiation, and engagement with assigned clients to secure any needed contractual changes and/or program renewals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred.
  • Minimum expected years of relevant experience: 12 years in complex project and program management (multi-year, multi-workstream programs).
  • Management and supervisory experience.
  • Experience leading and managing functional and matrixed teams to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated success managing internal and external stakeholder relationships at all levels, including C-suite executives and medical professionals.
  • Experience managing program budgets greater than $1M, on-time and on-budget.
  • Experience with human-centered design for mission-driven initiatives.
  • Knowledge of governance structures and best practices.
  • Success with process improvement that increased efficiency, reduced risk, and achieved goals.
  • Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP)® a plus.
  • Experience in providing project management training and consultation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management software (e.g. MS Project or Smartsheets).
  • Experience leading with a formal project management methodology, such as the PMBOK.
  • Expertise in processes, procedures, and policies to effectively manage change and implement quality practices on projects throughout the organization.

  • Industry competitive base pay ranging from $135,000 - $148,000 for this role. Base offers are determined by several factors including but not limited to your relevant work experience, education, certifications, location, internal pay equity, etc.
