Role Description

The University of Washington Division (UW) of the Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Division’s Healthcare Team as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG).

This position offers a unique opportunity to advise and represent UW Medicine’s multi-entity academic health system, along with UW’s Health Science Schools and its world-class biomedical research community. The Healthcare Team advises UW on a diverse array of healthcare and higher education issues, including:

  • Fraud and abuse
  • Antitrust issues
  • Clinical contracting
  • Insurance and reimbursement
  • Medical staff matters
  • Clinical risk management
  • Medical privacy
  • Student and trainee matters
  • Federal executive orders and enforcement actions
  • Strategic affiliations

The team’s clients include:

  • UW Medical Center
  • Harborview Medical Center
  • Airlift Northwest
  • UW’s Graduate Medical Education program
  • UW Medicine’s strategy, external affairs, and finance teams
  • UW Medicine supply chain
  • Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and others

The Healthcare Team currently includes five AAGs who report to a Managing AAG. The team has a culture built on cooperation and collegiality and is part of the UW Division of the Attorney General’s Office, which is located in the University District in Seattle and comprises 19 attorneys and 10 support personnel.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of legal experience, with experience in healthcare or higher education law preferred
  • Practical problem-solving abilities

  • Strong interest in understanding the client's strategic interests
  • Superior communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Ability to handle competing time-sensitive matters

Requirements

  • Graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program
  • Licensed to practice law in Washington state (or actively pursuing admission by motion)
  • Commitment to public service as demonstrated by background, talents, attitude, and enthusiasm for public law practice
