Role Description
The Private Products Underwriting Assistant supports the underwriting team by reviewing documentation, preparing policy materials, assisting with training initiatives, and coordinating with agents and internal departments. This role develops foundational knowledge of private product underwriting, agricultural practices, and policy procedures while supporting the full policy life cycle.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Review applications, acreage reports, and related documentation for accuracy; conduct research on average yields, RMA prices, market futures, and specialty crop requirements.
- Obtain and verify required documentation from agents, following up for clarification as needed.
- Assist in developing training materials and participate in both formal and informal training efforts for Private Product processing. Meet all policy sales closing date deadlines in accordance with established procedures.
- Contribute content for presentations and participate in agent update meetings, adjuster training sessions, webinars, and other meetings. Support virtual presentation recording with the Communications team.
- Develop a thorough understanding of insurance products, procedures, regional crops, and farming practices.
- Gain proficiency in General and Special Provisions and policy endorsements.
- Build strategic relationships with agents and staff by answering questions and providing examples and guidance.
- Troubleshoot software and system issues, including rate population, AgriNet questions, and document management concerns.
- Assist with testing system enhancements and fixes throughout the year.
- Support the ongoing improvement and maintenance of state manuals, filing documentation, competitor information, and the creation of new manuals.
- Work with the rate generator and become familiar with annual rate establishment processes.
- Collaborate with other internal departments to achieve shared goals.
- Perform policy cleanup activities, including correcting forms, rates, and other documentation inaccuracies.
- Support training team efforts for webinars and virtual training sessions.
- Respond to system-related questions, rate troubleshooting, AgriNet inquiries, and document management issues.
- Enter unsupported crop/hail approval dates and key CHL and CHPP coverages as needed.
- Develop relationships with Business Development Representatives to identify trends and support marketing and business plans for Private Products.
- Verify policies and applications through Document Management.
- Assist with preparing and distributing Private Product policy books (provision packets) electronically to agencies.
- Review flyers, guides, and similar materials for accuracy.
- Provide regional backup support as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Required - High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred - Degree in Agriculture, Business, or related field.
- Minimum 1 year of customer service experience.
- Agriculture experience preferred.
- Ability to learn to prioritize work and manage multiple projects at one time.
- Detail oriented for accurate proofing and data entry of forms.
- Strong phone and communication skills essential.
- Ability to problem solve and use analytical data to make decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to work with others to accomplish goals.
- Experience with agriculture and customer service.
- Experience with using standard desktop applications such as Microsoft Office.
- Awareness of local/regional agriculture practices a plus.
Physical Requirements & Work Conditions
- Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally when traveling for meetings and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
- Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Up to 15% travel – meetings, update, training, as needed to meet the demands of our producers.
