Job Description

About Apartment List

Apartment List is on a mission to deliver renters a home they love at the value they deserve. We’re building a smarter, more personalized rental experience that connects ready-to-move renters with homes that truly fit their lifestyle. Our platform uses data and AI to match renters with properties they’ll love while helping property partners drive stronger leasing outcomes.

As a virtual-first company, our team of A-Listers works from cities across the country, united by a shared mission and a commitment to high standards. We move quickly, challenge the status quo, and continuously learn from one another as we build a better renting experience.

Role Summary

We’re looking for a Director, Corporate Controller to lead Apartment List’s accounting and payroll operations, financial reporting, and tax oversight. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this leader ensures the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements while building scalable accounting processes that support the company’s continued growth.

This role is both strategic and hands-on. You’ll oversee the monthly close, payroll, technical accounting, and corporate tax compliance while partnering closely with Finance, Legal, and external advisors. You’ll also lead and develop a team of four accounting professionals responsible for general ledger, revenue recognition, financial reporting, and tax operations, helping build a high-performing accounting function that supports strong decision-making across the business.

Here’s what you’ll do as part of the team

  • Lead the accounting organization, including general ledger, equity, payroll, revenue recognition, financial reporting, and tax compliance
  • Oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial statements
  • Own technical accounting matters, including revenue recognition (ASC 606), lease accounting (ASC 842), equity accounting, and other complex transactions
  • Manage corporate tax strategy and compliance, including international tax matters such as transfer pricing and intercompany accounting across global entities, including Israel
  • Oversee entity-level accounting and consolidation across multiple legal entities and sets of books, ensuring accurate reporting across the organization
  • Manage sales tax compliance and automation using Anrok, partnering with Finance and external advisors to ensure accurate reporting and filings
  • Strengthen and scale accounting processes, systems, and internal controls to support company growth and operational efficiency, including leveraging AI and automation to streamline workflows, reduce manual processes, and improve reporting accuracy
  • Lead the annual audit process and manage relationships with external auditors
  • Hire, develop, and mentor a high-performing accounting team while fostering a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement

Here are the skills and experience you’ll need to be successful

  • You have 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles in corporate accounting or controllership
  • You have strong expertise in corporate tax compliance and tax strategy, including corporate tax provisions and sales tax compliance
  • You have deep knowledge of GAAP, technical accounting, and financial reporting standards
  • You have experience leading and developing accounting teams in fast-growing or technology-driven organizations
  • You have successfully managed audits and implemented strong internal controls in a complex business environment
  • You have strong systems and process orientation, with experience improving accounting workflows or financial infrastructure
  • You have the ability to translate complex financial topics into clear insights for cross-functional partners and leadership
  • You have experience with treasury - Cash management, cash forecasting, debt covenants, debt refinancing etc
  • You have a CPA or equivalent accounting certification (strongly preferred)

What success looks like

  • The accounting organization delivers a predictable monthly close and accurate financial reporting for leadership and stakeholders
  • The company maintains clean annual audits and strong internal controls with external auditors
  • Revenue recognition, tax compliance, and reporting processes scale effectively as the business grows
  • Accounting systems and workflows become more efficient through automation and AI-enabled improvements
