Job Description
Role Description
Karoo Health is seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will be the backbone of our deployment and infrastructure strategy, directly supporting our software and data engineers as they build and scale our healthcare platform. You are energized by the idea of building something new and want to work on problems that matter.
As a DevOps Engineer at Karoo, you must be a curious and eager problem solver with a hunger for building well-designed, high-quality infrastructure solutions. You thrive on producing simple solutions to complex architectural problems and engaging in constructive dialogue to find the best path forward.
What You'll Do
- Workflow Orchestration: Support the data engineering team in managing workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow or AWS Step Functions) for production-grade data pipelines.
- Automate: Design, build, and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines (utilizing GitLab) to ensure seamless, automated software delivery and data pipeline deployments.
- Architect: Design and deploy scalable, secure, cloud infrastructure leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) best practices to support high-availability healthcare applications.
- Monitor: Implement comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure platform reliability and performance, providing visibility into both application health and data processing speeds.
- Safeguard Data: Act as a primary defender of our environment; ensure all infrastructure remains compliant with strict healthcare data regulations, specifically HIPAA and HITRUST.
- Collaborate: Work closely with software and data engineers to optimize system architecture and performance of databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow or AWS Step Functions).
- Innovate: Evaluate and implement emerging tools and technologies that improve the developer experience and system resilience.
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of dedicated professional experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Platform Engineering, ideally within a high-growth startup environment.
- Deep understanding of cloud platforms, with a strong preference for AWS and cloud-native development (S3, Lambda, RDS, IAM).
- Expertise in Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Practical experience with healthcare data regulations (HIPAA, HITRUST) and implementing security best practices at the infrastructure layer.
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes for orchestrating microservices and data workloads.
- Strong knowledge of system architecture, scalability, and performance optimization across the full stack.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage complex projects, and make high-impact technical decisions regarding infrastructure.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require employer sponsorship now or in the future.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and equity in an early-stage startup. The starting salary for this role is between $150K - $175K annually based on factors such as cost of living, experience, etc.
- Opportunity to define the technical solution from the ground up.
- Possibly fully remote work environment with flexible hours.
- Health benefits, learning stipends, and professional development support.
- A collaborative and transparent company culture that values creativity and ownership.
