Role Description
The VISN 10 CRH TELE EMERGENCY CARE Registered Nurse (RN) supports the VISN 10 Tele Emergency Care (TEC) under the guidance of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) which provides support health care services to veteran patients across the continuum of care in both home and institutional settings. The RN supports the location to and from which care is delivered, including but not limited to the veteran's home, VA clinical locations and provider alternate worksites.
The RN provides virtual care and counseling for veterans through a virtual care system for the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness based on the application of the nursing process which includes:
- Telephone triage
- Systematic data gathering
- Assessment
- Use of appropriate nursing judgment
- Evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems
Recommendations may be emergent and include those to preserve life, prevent disability, or promote health and well-being, including:
- e911 activation
- Transfer to an emergency care licensed independent provider (LIP)
- Teaching and counseling
The RN collaborates with other members of the expanded health care team, facilitates coordination and transition of care between services, and involves the patient and family in the decision-making process. The RN minimizes fragmentation of healthcare delivery and optimizes quality of patient and family outcomes in a cost-effective manner. The incumbent works effectively with all levels of staff and provides coverage for other Tele-EC RNs when they are unavailable to perform these duties. This position will meet the needs of our VISN 10 facilities and may require on-site delivery of care if needed.
This position duties will include but is not limited to the following:
- Provides critical medical, technical and program support necessary to sustain efficient telehealth operation for the VISN 10 CRH.
- Facilitates communication and collaboration between all members of the healthcare team.
- Provides operational support coordinated and provided by this position, which includes direct patient care and support of the delivery of health care through telehealth and face-to-face modalities.
- Collaborates with services internal and external to VA to facilitate care transition to effectively meet patients' needs.
- Serves as patient advocate, leads staff, and collaborates with colleagues as she/he continues to enhance his/her own and the team's professional growth, development, and practice.
- Minimizes fragmentation of healthcare delivery and optimizes quality of patient and family outcomes in a cost-effective manner.
- Navigates skillfully efficient coordination of complex chronic pain care.
Qualifications
- English Language Proficiency.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure.

- A dedicated, ergonomic workspace is required to minimize strain.
- Proficiency with keyboard and mouse use is essential for efficient electronic medical record operation.
- Requires adequate vision to accurately perform the assigned duties, distinguish basic colors and assess patients and the environment safely.
- The position requires the ability to hear at a level to perform the assigned duties, and the use of hearing aids is permitted.
