Job Description

Summary

The RF & Fiber Optic Network Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing two-way radio systems, fiber optic infrastructure, and telecommunications network equipment. This role supports both RF communications systems (including Motorola and Kenwood platforms) and fiber optic plant operations (inside and outside plant). The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in RF systems, fiber networking, and IP-based communications, along with a commitment to safety, quality, and customer service. This position requires the ability to work independently or as part of a team in office, field, and outdoor environments.

 

Candidate must be able to reliably commute to Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone National Park within one hour.

Essential Functions:

RF Systems & Communications

  • Install, program, align, and maintain Motorola and Kenwood two-way radio systems, repeaters, and accessories.
  • Diagnose and repair RF, audio, and network-related issues in mobile and base station radios.
  • Conduct bench and field-testing using service monitors, spectrum analyzers, and other RF diagnostic tools.
  • Configure, test, and troubleshoot radio programming software and network interfaces.
  • Support firmware updates, system upgrades, and integration with IP-based networks.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and company safety standards.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to customers and field personnel.

Fiber Optic & Network Operations

  • Perform inside and outside fiber optic plant installation, including Cat 6 cabling.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve fiber optic network anomalies.
  • Conduct fiber testing, maintenance, splicing, replacement, and underground cable locating.
  • Install, configure, provision, and implement telecommunications and infrastructure equipment.
  • Support Layer 1 and Layer 2 networking operations.
  • Coordinate with contractors, service providers, and local utilities.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with company and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation, reports, inventory records, and work orders.
  • Perform general site maintenance (painting, cleaning, inspections, weed control, etc.).
  • Respond to emergency network outages within required timeframes.

Job Requirements

  • Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Minimum three years of experience in telecommunications, RF, or fiber environments operations
  • Associate degree or technical school equivalent (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with Motorola CPS/RSS and Kenwood, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with analog and digital radio systems (P25, DMR, NXDN, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of RF theory, antenna systems, and RF test equipment.
  • Basic understanding of IP networking and telecom infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Two years of radio/communications technician experience (public safety, LMR, or similar), and two years of fiber optic installation or construction experience.
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL).
  • Cisco network training or certification.
  • Adtran Total Access training.
  • Experience with dispatch consoles, microwave systems, or IP-based communication systems.
  • Knowledge of FCC licensing and frequency coordination procedures.
  • Experience supporting public safety communication systems.
  • Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Ability to climb ladders (over 6 feet) and work at various heights.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required (approximately 50–75%).
  • Must be able to reliably commute to Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone National Park within one hour.
  • Ability to obtain required certifications post-hire as required for the role.
  • Ability to pass and maintain compliance with federal background check and drug-free workplace requirements.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency outages within 4 hours when required.
  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to construction sites, telecom facilities, rooftops, and confined spaces.
