Job Description
Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Vice President, Sr. Actuary!
About the role
In this role, you will lead all aspects of financial reporting and reinsurance for Symetra’s Retirement Actuarial Group. This role will report to the Retirement Actuarial lead SVP and will be a member of management and hold an important leadership position as the company expands.
The VP, Sr. Actuary, will prepare materials and present them at quarterly business results meeting with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team. You will focus on continuous improvement of the reporting function and collaborate with leaders on new reinsurance programs and regulations. You will prioritize the company’s financial well-being, and own the production, analysis, and documentation of actuarial financial reporting. You will play a vital role in profitability analysis, financial planning, and reinsurance strategy.
What You will Do
- Direct the actuarial valuation groups for the retirement division according to US GAAP and US Statutory standards.
- Coordinate and review the asset/liability modeling development and output for any principles-based reserving for US Statutory and any Market Risk Benefits.
- Conduct monthly financial results analysis and review, taking ownership of explaining actual-to-plan variances.
- Prepare the division’s financial and business plan.
- Management related duties including reviewing work, developing employees, and leading teams.
- Ensure accurate governance and controls over the financial reporting processes.
- Prioritize modeling improvements and updates. Direct strategy on model optimization and reporting framework.
- Provide input on potential future annuity reinsurance transactions, including offshore agreements.
- Analyze existing reinsurance agreements to assess financial viability and optimize terms, making recommendations to management based on results.
- Establish and run operational aspects of financial reporting including reinsurance for the retirement division, ensuring processes align with industry guidelines and contract terms.
- Act as the primary point of contact for reinsurance status updates, report outs, and audits.
- Approximately 40% of time spent on recurring duties, 20% on project related work, and 40% management related duties including reviewing work, developing employees, and leading teams.

Compensation
Salary Range: $225,000 – $250,000 plus eligibility for annual bonus program and long-term incentive plan
Who You Are
- Bachelor’s degree with a strong quantitative background, including college-level Mathematics highly preferred. High school diploma required.
- 10+ years of insurance-related actuarial experience required.
- 2+ years of direct experience with reinsurance required.
- FSA designation required.
- Fixed Indexed Annuity experience required and extensive knowledge of US GAAP FAS 133 and US Statutory Actuarial Guideline 33/35.
- Demonstrated mastery of insurance/products and very knowledgeable on industry info. Recognized as an internal expert in a variety of company, industry, and regulatory actuarial issues.
- Registered Indexed Annuity Experience Preferred.
- Exceptional technical and digital literacy, including use of sophisticated spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and data management tools.
- Excellent communication skills, with experience presenting to executive management.
- Proven ability to lead, empower, and handle actuarial functions and large teams remotely and across varying time zones.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a high degree of accuracy and strong process organization.
- Proven dedication to professional development.
- Actuarial Modeling software and asset modeling experience preferred.

This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra’s corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
