Job Description
Midjourney is an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species. We are a small self-funded team focused on design, human infrastructure, and AI.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Tax Accountant to manage and support both direct and indirect tax functions. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work cross-functionally with finance, legal, and business operations teams. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws, contribute to tax planning strategies, and support audits and regulatory filings across various jurisdictions. This role is fully REMOTE with optional travel to Midjourney Headquarters in San Francisco once per quarter. Preference for candidates in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct Tax:
- Review federal, state, and local corporate income tax returns and estimated tax payments.
- Prepare annual income tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740.
- Conduct tax research and provide technical guidance on complex tax matters and business transactions.
- Support tax audits and respond to inquiries from taxing authorities.
- Participate in strategic tax planning and forecasting.
Indirect Tax:
- Prepare, review, and file sales/use tax, VAT, GST, and other indirect tax returns.
- Monitor changes in indirect tax legislation and ensure timely implementation of changes.
- Maintain exemption certificates and ensure proper documentation is in place.
- Support nexus studies and registration requirements in new jurisdictions.
- Assist with indirect tax audits and notices from various tax authorities.
General:
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance.
- Maintain and improve tax processes, controls, and systems.
- Assist with special projects as needed, including system implementations and process automation.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s in Taxation or CPA preferred).
- 4–7 years of relevant tax experience (public accounting and/or corporate tax department).
- Strong understanding of U.S. federal, state, and local tax laws; experience with international tax is a plus.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel; Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- For this position, you must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
Compensation:
- Annual base salary of $120,000 - $140,000* with additional discretionary bonus component.
- 100% of employee insurance premiums paid by Midjourney, plus supplemental benefits plans.
