Job Description

Description

At R3, we are committed to providing our clients with best-in-class solutions for all of their IT needs. We are relentless in our pursuit of excellence and dedicated to providing our clients with unsurpassed quality, service, and value day in and day out. As we continue to grow and innovate, we are seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team. If you’re ready to join our mission of setting the standard for IT excellence, we are looking for a talented Controller to join our team.

We are seeking a highly driven Controller to support a growing and scaling organization in the IT services industry. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in fast-paced environments, understands operational finance within a services model, and enjoys building processes that scale.

You will oversee core accounting functions, manage both domestic and offshore team members, and play a key role in strengthening financial operations, audit readiness, and revenue accuracy. This is not a purely oversight role- we need someone who can roll up their sleeves while also leading and developing a team.

This position is remote; however, candidates must be located in the Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia (DMV) area. Local presence is required to support leadership collaboration, periodic in-person meetings, and ongoing alignment as the company continues to grow and scale.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Manage and develop accounting staff, including offshore resources
  • Oversee performance, workflow distribution, and process accountability
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all accounting activities
  • Build scalable team structures to support company growth

Core Accounting Oversight

  • Oversee General Ledger (GL) integrity and month-end close process
  • Manage Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR)
  • Oversee billing operations within a services-based revenue model
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition, particularly within project-based or time & materials environments
  • Support and maintain strong internal controls

Financial Operations & Systems

  • Experience with Unanet strongly preferred
  • Partner with operations and project teams to ensure financial accuracy
  • Improve reporting processes and financial visibility across the organization
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and support external financial audits

Process Improvement & Scaling

  • Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements
  • Help modernize financial workflows to support company growth
  • Drive automation and standardization where possible
  • Support financial infrastructure improvements as the company scales

Audit & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal policies
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
  • Strengthen documentation and controls in preparation for growth or M&A activity (if applicable)
  • Oversee Sales & Use Tax compliance, including filings, reconciliations, and jurisdictional requirements

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Prior experience in leadership or supervisory role
  • Strong understanding of services-based accounting models
  • Proven experience managing offshore accounting resources
  • Deep knowledge of GL, AP, AR, billing, and revenue recognition
  • Experience supporting financial audits
  • Strong process improvement mindset
  • Advanced Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in IT services, MSP, or professional services environment
  • Hands-on experience with Unanet
  • CPA or CPA-track preferred but not required

What We’re Looking For

  • A builder - someone who has supported a company during growth or scaling
  • A leader who can manage people but is not afraid to get into the details
  • A process-oriented thinker who can improve systems without overcomplicating them
  • Someone comfortable operating in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment

Why join our winning team?

  • Competitive wages to reflect your experience and skills.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans to keep you and your family healthy.
  • 401(k) with company match to help you plan for the future.
  • Flexible time off policies to ensure you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  • We offer many remote opportunities, allowing you to work wherever you want.
  • We are committed to creating a positive impact on society and contributing to a better world--we're involved in our community and encourage our employees to do the same.
  • We are reshaping the industry and the way it thinks about technology and service.
  • We strive to be better and encourage our employees to do the same by offering training incentives and bonuses to help you and your career grow.
  • The opportunity to be a part of an amazing team.

The salary range for this position is $120,000 -$150,000/year.

The base salary range for this position is an estimate and may vary depending on relevant factors, including but not limited to education, experience, certifications, and skillset, as well as internal equity and business considerations. This range reflects base pay only and does not include bonuses, incentives, benefits, or other forms of compensation that may be offered as part of the total compensation package.
