Job Description
Role Description
Quartz is looking for an ambitious, hungry, and talented Staff Reporter to join our newsroom covering U.S. business news. This is an opportunity for a journalist with experience in the fast-paced world of daily business news who is ready to take on high-impact features and enterprise reporting.
While this position will include some timely coverage, you will be responsible for moving beyond the daily churn to produce original, deeply reported stories that illuminate U.S. business, technology, companies, markets, the economy, and more. We are looking for a reporter who doesn't just follow the news cycle but anticipates it — someone who can connect the dots between global market shifts, technological disruption, and the future of work to tell award-winning stories that can't be found anywhere else.
As a Staff Reporter at Quartz, you’ll be responsible for:
- Original Reporting: Identify and execute high-value enterprise stories, profiles of industry disruptors, narrative features, and other high-impact business stories.
- Editorial Judgment: Exercise sound news judgment around sourcing, framing, and risk, escalating sensitive or complex stories appropriately.
- Story Development: Generate and pitch original story ideas rooted in deep reporting, not just reactive coverage.
- Impactful Storytelling: Distill complex business topics into compelling, human-centric narratives that resonate with a global audience of decision-makers.
- Sourcing: Build and maintain a robust network of sources to provide "inside the room" perspective on the companies and trends shaping the economy.
- Collaborative Enterprise: Partner with senior editors and seasoned features writers to develop long-term reporting projects while maintaining a consistent cadence of ambitious individual work.
- Pacing Judgment: Balance long-term enterprise projects with timely reporting when editorial judgment calls for speed.
- Brand Authority: Represent Quartz as a leading voice in business journalism, appearing on podcasts, in our newsletters, and elsewhere to provide expert analysis.
After 1 week:
- Fully onboarded to Quartz’s editorial standards, voice, and workflows.
- Introduced to the editors and to fellow reporters.
- Familiar with Quartz’s core coverage areas, recent enterprise work, and editorial priorities.
- Actively participates in story discussions and pitch meetings.
- Begins to develop and refine initial story ideas with editor guidance.
After 1 month:
- Publishing timely, well-reported stories that meet Quartz’s editorial standards.
- Actively pitching original story ideas informed by reporting, not just news cycles.
- Demonstrating growing confidence in sourcing, framing, and story structure.
- Developing early source relationships in relevant coverage areas.
- Showing strong editorial judgment around pacing, scope, and when to escalate questions or concerns.
After 6 months:
- Regularly producing original, deeply reported enterprise journalism.
- Demonstrating ownership of story ideas from conception through publication.
- Contributing meaningful insight to coverage across topic areas.
- Maintaining a healthy balance between longer-term enterprise projects and timelier reporting.
- Building a credible and growing source network.
- Recognized by editors as a thoughtful, dependable reporter with strong judgment and a clear voice.
- Continuing to grow in ambition, confidence, and editorial independence.
Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a high-pressure, daily business newsroom, preferably with experience covering U.S. business news.
- 1–2 years of experience writing business features or enterprise stories is a strong plus.
- A sophisticated understanding of U.S. business, technology, markets, and more.
- A sharp, authoritative, and engaging writing style prioritizing clarity and logic without sacrificing personality.
- A self-starter with the hustle required to land a difficult interview and the discipline to see a long-form project through to completion.
- Comfort working alongside modern newsroom tools and workflows, with an understanding of how enterprise reporting fits into a broader digital publishing operation.
Benefits
- Highly competitive salary
- Attractive vacation, healthcare & benefits, including generous RRSP matching
- Monthly fitness reimbursements to support a healthy and active lifestyle
- Flexible work hours and options to work remotely
- High-end hardware and equipment
- Autonomy and freedom to do your best work on your own terms
- Opportunities to learn and grow through professional development support, funding, and mentorship
