Role Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior UI/UX Engineer to support enterprise digital services for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In this role, you will lead the design and implementation of modern, accessible, and user-centered digital interfaces that support mission-critical applications used by Veterans, clinicians, and VA staff.

Responsibilities

  • User Experience Design & Strategy: Lead the design of intuitive and accessible user experiences for enterprise VA applications. Translate user research, personas, and journey maps into effective interface designs that improve usability and service delivery.
  • UI Development & Engineering: Develop responsive, high-performance user interfaces using modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, or similar technologies. Build reusable UI components and scalable design patterns that align with enterprise design systems.
  • Human-Centered Design Implementation: Conduct user research, usability testing, and iterative design sessions to ensure applications meet the needs of Veterans, clinicians, and internal VA users. Produce wireframes, prototypes, and interaction models that guide development.
  • Accessibility & Compliance: Ensure all user interfaces comply with Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards. Perform accessibility audits, implement remediation strategies, and integrate accessibility best practices into development workflows.
  • Design System Alignment: Collaborate with engineering and design teams to implement consistent UI components and patterns aligned with enterprise design systems and federal digital service standards.
  • Agile Collaboration: Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives. Work closely with product managers, developers, and DevSecOps teams to ensure efficient delivery of high-quality user experiences.
  • Performance Optimization: Ensure user interfaces are optimized for speed, scalability, and cross-browser compatibility across desktop and mobile platforms.
  • Mentorship & Technical Leadership: Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior UI/UX engineers and designers. Promote best practices in design thinking, front-end development, and accessibility engineering.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in UI/UX engineering, front-end development, or digital product design.
  • Strong experience designing and developing modern enterprise user interfaces using React, Angular, Vue, or similar frameworks.
  • Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
  • Experience creating wireframes, prototypes, and user interface designs using tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing responsive and mobile-first design principles.
  • Experience integrating front-end applications with RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Strong understanding of Section 508 accessibility standards and WCAG compliance.
  • Experience working within Agile development environments.
  • Knowledge of component-based design systems and reusable UI architecture.
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance optimization skills for front-end applications.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git) and modern CI/CD workflows.
