Scope of Position

The Tumor Registrar is responsible for abstracting, reviewing, synthesizing and summarizing clinical information, and independently coding patient abstracts according to all oncology standard setter coding requirements, including the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System reporting requirements. The data documented allow the cancer registry department to produce complete, timely and high-quality data to meet required reporting and accreditation requirements as well as support OSUCCC-James operational, research, quality and finance areas. Data are ultimately aggregated with other hospitals and reported at a state and national level (cancer incidence, mortality, etc.).

Position Summary

The Tumor Registrar owns at least one disease site for case finding and case reportability as well as initial and ongoing abstracting.  They are responsible for remedying data quality issues identified through quality assurance checks. Abstracts a case per national standards: within 1.5- 2 hours and with an average accuracy rate of at least 95%. Also meets additional departmental quality standards such as rates of edits, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree required.  Bachelor's degree preferred or combination of relevant training and experience.  Oncology Data Specialist certification required.   At least 1 year abstracting in a hospital-based cancer registry required; ability to abstract multiple sites independently.

Ongoing: Must maintain the Oncology Data Specialist-Certified (ODS-C) credential through the National Cancer Registrars Association.
