The Hospital Coder selects and sequences appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes using mandated inpatient coding systems to ensure the organization receives optimal, legally entitled reimbursement. This role involves using computerized encoding systems, sequencing codes according to guidelines like ICD-10-CM/PCS, and supporting accurate external data reporting for various administrative and quality purposes.
The primary purpose is to assign ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS codes and modifiers based on medical record documentation, while also resolving coding denials and pre-bill edits. This Level II role specifically includes evaluation and management, radiology, and emergency department coding.
