Role Description

We're looking for a Fire Safety Engineer on behalf of our client. This is a 1-year contract assignment (W-2). You will be a Fire Safety subject matter expert (SME) for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will oversee all safety analyses for project-level reports, including hazard mitigation analysis (HMA).

The team performs failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), heat flux analysis, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to ensure that all fire safety requirements are met. You will travel to local jurisdictions to present BESS and fire safety to multiple groups, including:

• First responders
• Authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs)
• Public utility commissions (PUCs)
• Community meetings

You will address and educate each team member about their specific concerns.

Key Responsibilities

• Review all UL 9540a reports from cell-, module-, and up through unit/installation-level, and provide direction.
• Offer guidance toward the fire safety system designs of BESS manufacturers and projects.
• Initiate and foster relationships with national, state, and local fire institutions and first responders, including Fire Marshalls, Fire Departments, and educational institutions.
• Standardize information around BESS fire safety systems throughout the organization, ensuring messaging in every region in which our projects are deployed.
• Participate in task groups and technical committees for collaboration and direction of the advancement of industry codes and standards about the safety of battery energy storage systems.

Qualifications

• Background in fire protection engineering principles, fire dynamics, and battery technology safety.
• Experience with NFPA 855 (Energy Storage Systems), IFC, and UL standards.
• Software Skills: Experience with FMEA, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, and risk assessment methodologies.

The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications, and skills, is estimated to be $45.00/hr. to $50.00/hr.
