Role Description
The Remote Sensing Scientist will manage and conduct studies on water and energy cycles as represented by state-of-the-science data assimilation, numerical weather prediction systems, and reanalysis operating over various spatial and temporal scales. They are responsible for validating, verifying, and seeking improvements in the representation of these processes.
- Using satellite remote sensing data sets and specialized experience to validate and identify means of improving modeling systems.
- Developing new analyses that enhance the societal benefit and economic impact of research to operations and applications of these systems.
- Producing written reports, conference presentations, proposal submissions, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. - preferably in science, engineering, or business; (Bachelor's and experience in a specialized area may be substituted for a degree)
- 4 - 6 years of verifiable full-time work experience.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
Requirements
- Performing process studies and identifying methods to suggest improvements in the representation of energy and water cycle processes represented in regional to global scale weather forecasting and data assimilation systems, through the use of novel applications of remote sensing and other in situ observations.
- Developing new research, analyses, findings, and applications about the Earth’s water and energy cycle using current and future satellite observations.
- Supporting colleagues in developing new applications of data from weather forecasting systems and remote sensing products, targeting societal and economic benefit.
- Managing research projects, participating in relevant meetings, and identifying new research opportunities.
- Advising students and participating in supervisory committees.
- Writing periodic and annual reports, presenting findings in conferences, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Advising graduate research assistants.
