Job Overview:
The Linguist III role is a remote position requiring expertise in linguistics and proficiency in non-English languages, preferably Indonesian and another Austronesian language. The position involves performing linguistic analyses, error analysis, and research to support AI projects, including Responsible AI initiatives. Candidates must have a graduate degree in Linguistics and 0-3 years of experience.

Responsibilities:

• Perform linguistic analyses on large datasets.
• Conduct linguistic error analysis of AI model outputs to identify frequent and severe error categories.
• Write and revise guidelines for human annotation and AI projects, including translation tasks.
• Conduct typological and sociolinguistic research on various languages, highlighting similarities and differences.
• Perform linguistic analyses for Responsible AI, addressing issues like toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and cultural biases.
• Conduct linguistic literature reviews on NLP-adjacent topics and summarize findings.
• Compare vendor deliveries, identify error patterns, and provide actionable feedback.
• Provide guidance on linguistic knowledge, including typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, and pragmatics.
• Collaborate with native speakers of various languages.
• Communicate results of linguistic analyses to engineers and research scientists.

Qualifications:

• Graduate degree in Linguistics or related field; PhD is a plus.
• Native speaker of a non-English language (preferably Indonesian) with proficiency in another Austronesian language and broad knowledge of related languages.
• Working knowledge of other languages is a plus; proficiency in a low-resource language is valued.
• Ability to code in Python and query databases using SQL; other coding languages for data analysis are a plus.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills, especially in business and research communication.
• Experience working independently, prioritizing, planning, and tracking work.
• Education or training in project management is a plus.
• Self-motivation and ability to perform under pressure.
• Working knowledge of international language-classification standards is valued.
• Firm grasp of linguistic fields such as language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.
• Experience applying basic Natural Language Processing techniques.
• Experience working cross-functionally and collaborating with machine learning, NLP, or software engineers, or data scientists.
• Experience contributing to research papers.
• No known conflicts of interest in machine translation, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.

The specific compensation for this position will be determined by several factors, including the scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
