Job Description
Role Description
At HubSpot, we are looking for a highly skilled, technical, and experienced Senior Engineering Manager (SEM) to lead our Data Setup group. This team is responsible for the foundational layer of the HubSpot CRM and HubSpot Framework that underpins every feature:
- The properties, schemas, object types, and associations that power how millions of businesses model and structure their customer data.
- Core schema infrastructure that stores and serves definitions.
- UI surfaces that let admins build custom objects, configure properties, and define relationships.
This group is on the frontier of AI product development, contributing features to the HubSpot Data Agent and Breeze Assistant:
- Smart data capture: Analyzes your call and meeting transcripts to automatically update your CRM.
- Smart properties: Uses AI to perform web research, enriching your record data.
- AI data model recommendations: Allows customers chatting with Breeze Assistant to create new properties, objects, and configure sales pipelines.
This group also develops key upmarket features such as:
- Graphical data model builder.
- Conditional property logic.
- Custom data translations for international companies.
In this role, you will manage a team of 35+ engineers and managers across 9 teams spanning backend services and customer-facing frontend experiences. You will guide your group through the demands of operating at platform scale, ensuring foundational services and critical FE applications remain highly available and extensible as HubSpot continues to grow.
The ideal candidate is comfortable spanning backend systems and frontend product surfaces. They understand how to balance developer velocity with reliability demands. They can convey informed opinions on FE architecture, BE system design, and UX best practices.
As an engineering leader at HubSpot, you’ll do many things — and you likely already have experience doing some of them in the past. They are:
- A bias for fixing problems with technology rather than process.
- Passion for building reliable systems.
- Someone who never accepts the status quo; we need engineers and leaders who can see beyond what we have and towards what we can build, while maintaining an understanding of how to get there.
- Proven ability to solve complicated technical problems and analyze tradeoffs with empathy for the developers.
- Ability to demonstrate pragmatic decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Work autonomously, lead transparently, and prioritize product and people over strict processes.
Engineering leaders play to their strengths but are aligned with HubSpot’s mission and show the leadership qualities that we’ve found to be most effective:
- They build trust, respect, and empathy, and use that as a base to deliver radical candor.
- They foster a sense of team and mission.
- They have strong working relationships across the organization.
- They can balance our customer, business, and technical needs.
- They understand how we build and why.
- They represent our mission and culture to candidates.
- They get team members and candidates excited to take on new challenges.
If you're energized by building the infrastructure and UI experiences that make everything else possible — and by enabling both HubSpot engineers and our customers to unlock the full potential of a flexible, powerful data model — we'd love to talk.
