Role Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly analytical Staff Accountant or Senior Accountant to support our growing e-commerce and retail business. This role is critical to ensure accurate financial reporting in a lean environment using Shopify and QuickBooks currently. The ideal candidate is hands-on, comfortable working with raw data exports, and able to translate Shopify revenue, returns, and COGS activity into accurate accounting entries. This person will also help to support core accounting operations (AP, AR, cash planning) while owning general ledger integrity, month-end closing, and account reconciliations. This is the perfect role for someone who seeks exposure to all parts of the finance and accounting function.

  • General Ledger & Month-End Close (Primary Responsibility)
    • Prepare and post journal entries related to revenue, COGS, inventory, accruals, prepaid expenses, and operating expenses.
    • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
    • Maintain accurate and well-documented account reconciliations (bank, credit cards, AR, AP, inventory, accruals, prepaid, deferred revenue, gift cards, etc.).
    • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in GL activity and sub-ledger data.
    • Support audit and financial review requests with clear documentation.
  • Shopify Revenue & COGS Accounting (Critical Skill Set)
    • Export and analyze Shopify reports for sales, returns, discounts, taxes, shipping, gift cards, and refunds.
    • Consolidate Shopify activity into monthly revenue and COGS journal entries.
    • Reconcile Shopify payouts to bank deposits and accounting records.
    • Collaborate with operations to ensure inventory and cost data is accurate and complete.
    • Identify process improvements to reduce manual work and improve data accuracy.
  • Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Cash Planning (Lean Team Support)
    • Process vendor bills and payments using expense management system.
    • Support basic AR activities, including invoicing, collections, and customer credits.
    • Assist with weekly cash forecasting and cash flow analysis.
    • Monitor credit card and expense activity through Ramp and ensure proper coding and documentation.
  • Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
    • Maintain strong internal controls and documentation in a manual or semi-manual environment.
    • Help design and improve accounting workflows across financial systems.
    • Recommend automation tools, integrations, or process enhancements as the business scales.
    • Partner cross-functionally with operations, merchandising, and leadership to support data-driven decisions.

Qualifications

  • 2–6+ years of accounting experience (title dependent on seniority).
  • Strong hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online or Desktop.
  • Experience working with Shopify financial data (reports, exports, payouts, refunds, etc.).
  • Proven ability to manually consolidate and reconcile revenue and COGS data.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP fundamentals and double-entry accounting.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a lean environment.

Requirements

  • Experience with Ramp or Bill.com or similar expense management platforms.
  • Background in ecommerce, retail, or consumer brands.
  • Experience working in environments without full ERP integrations.
  • Exposure to inventory accounting, returns reserves, gift card accounting, or revenue recognition.
  • CPA, CPA candidate, or accounting degree preferred (but not required).
