Role Description
This hands-on role leads compensation, benefits, and payroll.
- Design and manage competitive, compliant programs
- Personally process biweekly payroll
- Requires autonomy, strong judgment, and a customer service mindset
- Balance strategy with execution
What You Will Do

Compensation & Total Rewards
- Lead compensation strategy, benchmarking, and salary structure management in a multi-state environment
- Support merit cycles, budgeting, and compensation decisions
- Maintain equitable, market-aligned frameworks
- Use data and market trends to inform decisions

Benefits & Employee Experience
- Oversee benefits administration (medical, dental, vision, retirement, leave)
- Lead renewals, broker relationships, and plan optimization
- Provide high-touch employee support and communication
- Manage compliance, open enrollment, and vendor performance

Payroll (Hands-On)
- Process biweekly payroll with accuracy and confidentiality
- Ensure multi-state and California compliance
- Resolve payroll issues promptly
- Maintain reporting and audit readiness

401(k) & Compliance
- Administer 401(k) plans and ensure ERISA/IRS/DOL compliance
- Manage audits, filings, and vendor relationships
- Improve participation and engagement

HRIS & Systems
- Manage HRIS (ADP Workforce Now preferred)
- Ensure data integrity and reporting accuracy
- Drive process improvements and support audits
Qualifications
- 6–7+ years across compensation, benefits, and payroll
- Hands-on payroll processing experience required
- Strong compensation analysis skills
- ADP Workforce Now experience preferred
- Nonprofit experience desirable
- Knowledge of FLSA, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, and multi-state payroll
- Ability to work independently with strong professionalism and communication
- CCP, CBP, or similar certification preferred
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
Work Environment
- Fully remote; must reside in California
- ~10% travel for meetings and retreats
- Reliable home office required
Compensation
- $70-$75/hour while on contract
- $150k plus generous benefits if hired on full-time
