Role Description

Do you want to make the next Liquid Death? Do you think of Erewhon as a grocery store or a pseudo-religion? Can you explain why Crocs are suddenly high fashion? Do you believe the next big insight might be buried in a TikTok comment thread? If so, keep reading.

Our next Director of Strategic Planning is a game-changing creative thinker and culture junkie, but is also a bright critical thinker and imaginative problem solver who elevates the work by zeroing in on razor sharp consumer and cultural insights. They are true creative strategists - curious, insightful, and hungry to do great work that is being talked about. This person will be integral to elevating the creative profile of the agency, working closely with the creative team. This is an opportunity to work with a team focused on growing the agency and creating nationally recognized work.

While this position is all about cross-team collaboration, you often act independently or only with a slight oversight from the Chief Strategy Officer. We are looking for a smart and insightful teammate, who is great at presenting their thinking and helping sell compelling work. Someone who is in sync with cultural trends, understands the power of social, and is full of ideas on how to leverage them in the work. We will ask for a proven record of doing so, and award-winning work would be a great proof point. As a senior team member, you will lead strategic development of campaigns, mentor junior strategists as we grow the department, participate in new business pitches, and collaborate closely with creative and account teams to deliver work that is impactful and talked about.

Local candidates are preferred because we believe in the magic that happens when we get together. But if you are truly an outstanding candidate we will be open to a remote position.

Job Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop insightful and innovative strategies and strong creative briefs that inspire creative teams and resonate with target audiences across channels. Contribute to fostering a culture of curiosity, courage and collaboration in the agency.
  • Client Partnership: Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to clients, presenting ideas confidently and building strong relationships by adding unique perspectives.
  • Research & Insights: Often in partnership with the CSO and outside partners, conduct and synthesize primary and secondary research to uncover meaningful consumer insights and cultural trends.
  • Creative Collaboration: Partner with creative teams to craft compelling briefs that ignite fresh and bold ideas and ensure strategic alignment.
  • Campaign Development: Develop strong creative briefs and jumping off points for excellent campaign development.
  • New Business: Participate in pitches to help land new exciting opportunities.
  • Mentorship: Lead, inspire, and develop junior team members as the agency grows.

Qualifications

  • Min 10 years of experience in a strategic role at an advertising agency, with a proven track record of driving successful campaigns; award-winning work will be a huge bonus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, Psychology, or a related field. A graduate degree is preferred.
  • Exceptional ability to identify cultural and human insights that translate them into the heart of great strategies and inspiring creative briefs. We will ask for past examples.
  • Outstanding presentation, writing, and storytelling skills that inspire. We will definitely ask for examples.
  • Must thrive in fast moving, cross-functional teams - collaboration with the creative, account, media, teams will happen every day. Also we hope you are fun to work with!
  • Deep understanding of today’s role of social and proven experience in leveraging it to reach various audiences; past social media strategy experience is a bonus.
  • Creative problem-solver with a growth mindset and a passion for tackling complex challenges.

Requirements

  • This position will eventually have responsibility of overseeing junior staff.
  • This is a full-time position. We are open to starting with a shorter-term contract to make sure it’s a good fit. Given the nature of the agency world, we hope that by now you have developed a strong work ethic and growth mindset. Occasional work outside standard business hours may be expected.

Benefits

  • Company-paid Health, and Life, STD, and LTD plans; employee-paid Dental and Vision.
  • 401(k) plan with immediate employer matching.
  • Generous Paid Time Off awarded as a lump sum on the first day of work, to include Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Paid holidays, Personal Time, and Karma Days to allow for giving back to the community, and Paid Parental Leave.
  • Summer Friday Holidays: Memorial Day through Labor Day will close every Friday at 2:00pm.
