Role Description

In addition to all of the responsibilities of a Public Safety Lieutenant, manages emergencies by directing other specialists, assigning and orchestrating tasks accordingly when responding to multiple emergencies. Serves as a preceptor in the onboarding of newly promoted Public Safety Lieutenants and Sergeants, to include orientation and training. Oversees platoon staff performance evaluations and scheduling. In the absence of the Major, assumes command of the area of assignment.

  • Maintains overall command of an assigned platoon or unit.
  • Oversees the management and coordination of daily duties of assigned personnel.
  • Assists in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of Public Safety Officer candidates.
  • Oversees personnel matters in area of assignment, including mentoring, development, and training of all staff under command.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of effective labor management relations.
  • Assumes operation and command of law enforcement investigations and incidents as necessary.
  • Plans, organizes, and manages various projects and programs focused on community-oriented policing and continuous quality improvement.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of Public Safety Department policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains positive relations with the University community.
  • Maintains liaison with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement preferred.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4 years of service with the Department of Public Safety, 2 of those at the rank of Lieutenant required.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of principles and techniques of police and investigative work; applicable municipal laws, ordinances, and regulations; interpersonal communication and modern management skills required.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in areas of responsibilities required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State upon hire required.
  • A NYS Sworn Peace Officer upon hire required.

Benefits

  • Compensation Range: $37.12 - $55.68.
  • The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.
  • Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
