Role Description

The Clinical Risk Manager is responsible for identifying, evaluating and mitigating potential risks to facilitate the management of the overall operation and strategy of the Legal & Clinical Risk Management program. Operating as a key subject matter expert and advisor, this role collaborates closely with clinical staff, legal counsel and organization leadership to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, reduce liability exposure and promote a culture of resident safety and risk awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Manages ongoing analysis, development and implementation of methods and systems to improve the overall safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the Legal & Clinical Risk Management program.
  • Manages and coordinates the divisional reviews of reported risk events, resident adverse events and sentinel events.
  • Analyzes event report data and facilitates interdisciplinary efforts to identify/implement appropriate organization-wide process and resident safety improvements.
  • Participates and assists in legal/risk management activities, including claims mitigation and litigation.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure general and focused training is conducted related to identified legal and clinical risk areas and process improvements.
  • Facilitates loss prevention training and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to review the current and proposed processes & procedures for impacts on resident/patient safety as well as legal and clinical risk.
  • Maintain compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or other regulating authorities as applicable to this role to ensure that Sunrise standards are always met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Current and unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Certification in Healthcare Risk Management (e.g. CPHRM) is a plus.
  • 4+ years of experience in clinical risk management, legal or healthcare compliance roles.
  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare rules and regulations, risk management principles and resident safety standards.
  • Strong analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills, with an ability to handle sensitive and complex issues.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and lead multidisciplinary initiatives.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of healthcare operations, resident care processes and clinical workflows.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements in clinical settings.
  • Familiarity with legal concepts related to liability, claims mitigation and litigation.
  • Proficient in conducting risk assessments and analyzing potential clinical and operational risks.
  • Strong analytical abilities to evaluate complex risk scenarios and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication to articulate risks, policies and improvement plans.
  • Ability to build trust and foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, including legal and clinical departments.
