Role Description
Orbital is currently seeking a Senior Substation Protection & Controls Engineer for a REMOTE WORK position within the Utility Services team. The ideal candidate will possess 7+ years of substation engineering experience. Candidates with a PE license are strongly preferred.
This role will be responsible for the relay protection & control engineering including detailed design for high voltage substation and transmission projects through 500kV. Depending upon the complexity of the project, the candidate may prepare, provide guidance, or assist in preparing and developing the engineering deliverables for electric substation projects, including:
- Development of one & three-line diagrams
- Schematics and wiring diagrams
- Control and relaying panel layouts and specifications
- Control and relaying panel and equipment wiring diagrams
- SCADA system and communications interfaces including RTUs and HMIs
- Auxiliary system design including batteries and chargers
- AC & DC load centers
- Conduit and cable sizing
- Overall bill of materials
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Utilizes understanding of the NEC, NESC, NEMA, ANSI, IEEE, industry standard work practices, client standards, and/or other applicable guidelines to complete engineering designs.
- Provide technical support for clients and support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource under the direction of the Department Manager.
- Work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in detailed electrical design and project management of utility substation projects.
- Participate in project conceptualization, work planning, and project execution.
- Support Pre-bid walkdowns with clients, prepare, review, and approve proposals and project estimates for new client projects.
- Perform technical analyses of electrical substation systems including AC & DC schematic development, relay protection and controls, wiring design, equipment arrangements, conduit and raceway design, bus work, lighting, grounding, and other relevant project deliverables.
- Prepare new drawing packages, modify existing packages and complete as-built documents.
- Support and review electrical power calculations, lighting and grounding calculations, and prepare equipment and installation specifications.
- Responsible for substation design drawings and package quality review.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university, or a related field with equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in substation design.
- Ideal candidate will have 10+ years of substation engineering and QA/QC experience.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively organize multiple assignments, complex assignments, and competing priorities to produce accurate products on time.
- Ability to collaborate in cross-functional work teams in the development and implementation of efficiencies.
- Exceptional analytical and decision-making skills, with a successful record of positive interactions with clients.
- Experience in creating and reviewing substation design drawings.
- Proficient with current computer applications including CAD systems, Microsoft applications, design and business enterprise software.
- Ability to successfully work with remotely located team members.
Requirements
- This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.

- Ability to obtain or currently a registered Professional Engineer (PE).
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Physical Substation and Protection & Controls design experience.
- AutoCAD experience.
