Role Description
The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Deputy Manager for our Custody Notification Service (CNS), a critical 24/7 service that protects the rights, safety, and welfare of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people taken into police custody across the Northern Territory.
This is a unique opportunity to combine legal practice, leadership, and advocacy in a role that directly impacts the justice system and supports some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
The CNS Deputy Manager supports the CNS Manager in coordinating and supervising the team delivering NAAJA’s 24-hour custody notification service. You will help ensure the service operates effectively while also participating in the roster providing legal advice and welfare checks to people in police custody.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Support the management and supervision of the CNS team and 24/7 roster
- Provide legal advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in police custody
- Assess welfare risks and ensure appropriate duty-of-care notifications
- Maintain accurate records, data systems, and reporting
- Support families of people in custody by providing information and reassurance
- Build strong relationships with police, stakeholders, and community partners
Qualifications
- Admission as a legal practitioner with eligibility for an NT Practising Certificate
- Strong knowledge of criminal law and legal procedure
- Experience providing high-quality legal advice and advocacy
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally safe and ethical practice
- A strong understanding of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is essential
