Role Description

The School of Professional Studies is seeking an adjunct instructor to enhance the course content and teach Writing in the Humanities for the Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences. The course will be offered in an online, synchronous, semester-based format geared toward part-time, adult undergraduate students.

  • Students will learn and use the approaches of the Humanities to understand and analyze expressive texts in multiple forms including literature, the arts, and popular media.
  • Build on the skills from the Academic Writing and Research (LIB111) course to critically read and think about various genres.
  • Produce effective written and oral communication that draws on library research and information literacy.
  • Instructor will add subject matter expertise and real-world examples, partnering with MCPHS leaders to ensure content is relevant to employers.
  • Partner with a project manager and instructional design manager during the course development process.
  • Play an important role in the continuous improvement and overall success of the course.
  • Help shape the learning experience for students and contribute to the growth of this new academic offering.
  • Work with assigned course designer to refine content (assignments, presentations, readings, discussion boards, quizzes, exams) as needed.
  • Develop and provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
  • Deliver course instruction using the University learning management system and digital tools.
  • Use the University’s learning management system to post syllabus, assignments, and other materials and to communicate with students.
  • Advise and assist students through office hours or scheduled appointments, by video conference, phone or email, and through other University-approved mechanisms.
  • Provide service, including student mentoring, ongoing course development, and collaboration towards a new certificate in introductory life sciences.
  • Maintain communication with the Program Director and Assistant Dean, identifying any students of concern and relaying student progress.
  • Maintain a presence in the course as directed by the Program Director, including answering student emails promptly and participating in interactive course elements where necessary.
  • Ensure the course meets the high-quality standards of other MCPHS online and on-campus courses.
  • Identify tactics to improve the course based on feedback.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related field.
  • Previous experience teaching and/or developing courses to undergraduate students in adult, part-time, or online programs.
  • Previous experience in the life sciences.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • A commitment to student success and the ability to engage and motivate students.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively interact with a wide array of parties at all levels (students, faculty, administration/staff, alumni, and external constituents).
  • Experience with a learning management system, such as Blackboard.
  • Experience with video-conferencing platforms, such as Zoom.

Requirements

  • Compensation: The pay range associated with this posting reflects the amount the University reasonably expects to pay for this role at this time.
  • Salary offers are determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications as well as internal equity, market data and pay in comparison to similarly situated employees doing comparable work.
  • Hiring Range: $1500.
