Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Heavy Equipment Program Manager, the incumbent of the Heavy Equipment Trainer position will be responsible for implementing, directing and conducting (scheduled and on-demand) heavy equipment training to include snow plows and transport vehicles according to organizational requirements. The Training Officer II conducts heavy equipment operator and train-the-trainer courses, assists in the development and refinement of curriculum, and cross-train with other ADOT trainers. Provide additional technical training support, as needed

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

Travel and deliver course content according to organizational requirements; Produce training schedules and classroom agendas; Prepare training material (presentations, worksheets etc.); Deliver hands on training for the use of heavy equipment which includes but is not limited to snow plows, trucks, transport vehicles, excavators, simulators etc.

Schedule and assist in the development of new equipment training materials; organize field training activities; complete course closeouts; maintain accurate training records and documentation; assist in the development of new programs, training materials and curriculum.

Provide ongoing technical transfer support for the Technical Training Program; conduct needs assessments and identify training gaps across districts to support statewide workforce development.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
• Highway construction and maintenance equipment
• Heavy equipment operation and safety practices
• Transportation safety standards and work zone traffic control
• Training methods and adult learning principles
• ADOT policies and procedures related to training and procurement

Skill in:
• Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, including public speaking and instruction
• Excellent organizational, coordination, and time-management abilities
• Proficiency with Google Workspace (Google Classroom, Calendar, Drive, etc.)
• Working knowledge of the Learning and Development Center (LDC)
• Proficient computer and technical skills related to training delivery and documentation

Ability to:
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver audio/visual training aids to enhance learning
• Organize and manage multiple training schedules simultaneously
• Evaluate training effectiveness and implement improvements
• Operate computers and training technology effectively
• Troubleshoot training delivery challenges in classroom and field environments
• Address training needs through complete and compliant course delivery

Selective Preference(s):

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating and evaluating heavy equipment operations (e.g., Snow plow, Front-end loader, Bulldozer, Motor grader, Load securement, etc.)
Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Current Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with “N” endorsement, or ability to obtain required endorsement within six (6) months of hire.

Must have Qualified Operator/Q status and Skill Evaluator status to be able to teach heavy equipment operator classes.

Candidates will obtain these credentials within 6 months of the hire/upgrade of this position and will continue to update his/her training certifications on each new piece of equipment coming into ADOT.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
