Job Summary

SMSI is hiring a Nuclear Safety Basis Analyst to support various facilities. The Nuclear Safety Basis Analyst will support the Nuclear Safety organization in the development of nuclear safety documentation for various facilities.
 
Responsibilities
 
  • Performs nuclear and non-nuclear risk and hazard analyses to ensure safe operation of nuclear and/or non-nuclear facilities.
  • Specific duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to; hazard identification, hazard analysis, facility hazard categorization, accident analysis, selection of controls, and development of associated safety basis documents including un-reviewed safety question determinations, documented safety analysis, technical safety requirements, safety assessment documents, facility safety plans, and facility safety analysis.
  • Provide technical assistance in the development of documented safety analyses, technical safety requirements, and related technical support documentation in accordance with industry and company quality standards.
  • Ensure that the developed nuclear safety documentation complies with requirements and as necessary, applicable controls are implemented in implementing procedures.
  • Identify and tailor applicable functional, operational, and regulatory compliance-based requirements for missions, projects, and activities.
  • Support safety basis implementation and readiness activities at NNSA facilities.
  • Provide expert level knowledge of integrating nuclear safety requirements to new missions, facilities, and projects.
  • Work with a team of exceptional professionals to analyze and solve technical nuclear safety issues.
  • Working knowledge of the USQ process.
 
Required Skills/Abilities
 
  • Minimum 5–8 years of relevant experience in nuclear safety industry through support of the Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and/or the commercial nuclear industry.
  • Previous experience with the use and implementation of 10 CFR 830, DOE O 420.1C, DOE STD-3009, DOE STD-1189, and related directives and standards is required.
  • Working knowledge of the USQ process is required.
  • Previous experience in developing and maintaining safety analysis and related documents is preferred at a DOE or NNSA site.
  • Candidate must demonstrate personal accountability for facility/project schedules, deadlines, budgets, and the safe performance of work.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen.
  • Candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance.
  • Must be able to interface with government program representatives on high-level, technical, and project issues.
  • Ability to successfully make quick decisions and meet goals while working under time constraints.
  • Possess planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated keen attention to detail.
  • Possess communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Apply proven technical knowledge working with multiple functional areas to provide comprehensive recommendations.
  • Ability to multi-task between changing requirements and priorities.
  • Requires a motivated self-starter who pays attention to details to support assignments while functioning in a time-sensitive, fluid environment.
 
Education
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, engineering, math, or science preferred.
  • Alternate combination of education and experience will be considered where candidate has an advanced degree.
 
** This is a remote position that may require minimal travel onsite as needed to the Los Alamos, NM area.**
