Role Description
Horace Mann is seeking an experienced and technically skilled Large Loss Adjuster to manage high-exposure homeowner property claims, including complex and litigated files. This role requires advanced investigative expertise, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to handle significant financial exposures while delivering exceptional service to policyholders and business partners. The ideal candidate thrives in complex claim environments, demonstrates strong business acumen, and brings deep knowledge of policy interpretation, dwelling estimating, and litigation management.
Key Responsibilities

Complex Claims Handling
- Manage and investigate large loss and high-exposure homeowner claims, including litigation files and claims involving public adjusters and attorneys.
- Verify coverage, interpret policy language, and determine liability and scope of damages.
- Evaluate claim facts and damage estimates to move claims toward appropriate and timely resolution.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of homeowners policies and jurisdictional documents to assigned claims.

Investigation & Damage Assessment
- Conduct on-site inspections as needed to evaluate damages and determine loss exposure.
- Investigate origin and cause of high-exposure claims, coordinating with insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, contractors, experts, Special Investigation Unit (SIU), public officials, and other adjusters.
- Identify prior losses and recognize potential environmental exposures.
- Reconcile contractor and mitigation estimates and collaborate with vendors to determine appropriate damage valuations.
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Xactimate, including preparation of large loss and total loss estimates (Level 3 certification encouraged).

Negotiation & Resolution
- Negotiate settlements with insureds, attorneys, and public adjusters in accordance with company best practices.
- Manage period of restoration for ALE (Additional Living Expense) and Loss of Rent claims.
- Interpret and apply policies, leases, by-laws, declarations, and contract coverages as they apply to all parties involved.
- Maintain transparent and timely communication with all stakeholders throughout the claim lifecycle.

Catastrophe & Collaboration
- Provide assistance during catastrophe events as needed.
- Participate in special projects and consult on process improvement initiatives.
- Actively engage in mentoring and training of other claims professionals.
Qualifications
- 5–7 years of dwelling estimating experience preferred, with demonstrated sustained technical performance.
- Proven experience handling homeowner property losses of $50,000 or greater.
- Strong claims and business acumen with litigation experience.
- Advanced knowledge of homeowner policy interpretation and coverage analysis.
- Demonstrated Xactimate expertise; encouraged to pursue Level 3 certification.
- Ability to work effectively with vendors regarding damage determination and estimate reconciliation.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment using claims systems and telephony platforms.
- Maintain and obtain required state adjuster licenses; ability to comply with all jurisdictional regulatory requirements.
- Strong communication, negotiation, analytical, and decision-making skills.
