Role Description
The Hearing Representative will manage a caseload of workers compensation lien files and represent clients during proceedings before the California Workers Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB). The role requires strong familiarity with California workers compensation procedures, the ability to analyze medical documentation, and the confidence to advocate before administrative judges during lien-related disputes. This role is focused on professionals who already operate within the California workers compensation system and who can independently manage lien litigation, settlement negotiations, and formal hearings.
Core Responsibilities
- Manage a full caseload of lien files from initial evaluation through final resolution
- Analyze medical documentation and rate permanent disability using the AMA Guides
- Review and assess medical records to determine apportionment of disability across contributing causes
- Represent clients before WCAB judges at Mandatory Settlement Conferences (MSC), Status Conferences, and walk-through settlements
- Advocate on behalf of employers, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators during medical lien hearings
- Conduct negotiations with lien claimants to resolve disputes where appropriate
- Prepare legal documentation including settlement agreements, declarations, and written position statements
- Maintain consistent communication with clients by providing case updates, summaries, and strategic recommendations
- Manage high-volume caseloads within a fully digital case management environment
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of California workers compensation defense experience as a Hearing Representative
- Direct experience appearing before WCAB judges in substantive hearings
- Demonstrated experience arguing medical lien disputes before a judge
- Experience handling medical liens, not solely copy service liens
- Strong proficiency rating permanent disability using the AMA Guides
- Experience reviewing medical records and determining apportionment
- Ability to independently manage a high-volume lien caseload
- Experience drafting legal documents such as settlement agreements, declarations, and written position statements
- Comfort operating within a paperless legal environment
- Stable employment history with no pattern of job hopping
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a California workers compensation defense firm
- Experience working for insurance carriers or third-party administrators (TPAs)
- Experience handling complex medical lien litigation matters
- Strong written communication skills used for formal case summaries and client reporting
- Background representing clients in Mandatory Settlement Conferences and lien hearings
