About the role
This position is remote if located outside of Lake Forest, IL. There is an opportunity for hybrid work environment in Lake Forest, IL if that is the candidate’s work location.
The Director, HR Business Partner (HRBP) serves as a strategic advisor and trusted partner to senior leaders across HealthFitness, aligning people strategies with business objectives to drive organizational effectiveness, client satisfaction, and financial performance. This role acts independently and exercises sound judgment in complex, ambiguous situations while supporting a dynamic business model that includes managing and staffing onsite corporate fitness centers for external clients. The HRBP partners closely with HealthFitness leaders, onsite management teams, and internal HR Centers of Excellence to deliver contractual commitments, elevate the associate experience, and support sustainable revenue and profitability.Key Accountabilities
Strategic Partnership
Serve as strategic advisor to senior and director-level leaders and onsite management teams to ensure staffing models, talent capabilities, and people practices support contractual obligations, service excellence, and a high-quality client and associate experience.
Act as a thought partner on workforce planning, succession, and organizational design to support both corporate teams and onsite client operations.
Apply a strong understanding of the operational and financial drivers of managing onsite corporate fitness facilities to inform HR solutions, recommendations, and trade-off decisions.
Support leaders through complex change management initiatives tied to client growth, renewals, transitions, and operational optimization.
Exercise independent judgment in advising leaders on people decisions, including performance management, corrective action, and talent risk, escalating only when appropriate.
Talent, Performance & Leadership Effectiveness
Lead execution of enterprise talent management processes including performance management, talent reviews, succession planning, and leadership development.
Coach leaders by demonstrating self-awareness, empathy, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate difficult conversations effectively.
Support leaders in building inclusive, high-performing teams that align with HealthFitness values and service expectations.
Partner with leaders to address underperformance early, including identifying gaps between coaching and formal corrective action.
Support leaders in documenting expectations, feedback, and decisions in a clear, defensible manner.
Employee Relations, Risk & Compliance
Independently manage complex employee relations matters, balancing business needs, associate experience, and risk mitigation.
Provide guidance on policy interpretation, employment law considerations, and compliance across a geographically dispersed workforce, including onsite client locations.
Serve as the primary investigator and HR lead on complex employee relations matters, including performance issues, conduct concerns, and policy violations.
Provide real-time guidance to leaders navigating sensitive situations, balancing empathy, consistency, and risk.
Partner with Legal and HR Operations as needed while maintaining ownership of case strategy and outcomes.
Culture, Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
Champion HealthFitness’ mission, values, and culture by modeling inclusive leadership, accountability, and integrity.
Leverage HR Centers of Excellence (Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, Learning & Development, HR Operations) to deliver integrated, scalable solutions.
Identify opportunities to simplify leader-facing HR processes and guidance, improving clarity, consistency, and ease of execution.
Stay current on external HR trends and best practices and apply insights to enhance organizational effectiveness.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
8–10 years of progressive HR experience, including strategic HR Business Partner responsibilities supporting senior leaders.
Experience working in a multi-state, highly regulated environment.
Demonstrated experience operating independently in complex, fast-paced environments with multiple stakeholders.
Strong business acumen with the ability to understand operational, client, and financial drivers.
Communicates with clarity and purpose; adapts messaging to diverse audiences.
Proficient in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Copilot).
Listens actively, builds trust, and establishes credibility with leaders, associates, and partners at all levels.
Makes sound, values-based decisions that balance people, risk and business outcomes.
Maintains professionalism in high-pressure situations, managing reactions effectively and demonstrating insight into personal impact.
Availability and flexibility to support sites and leaders in all time zones (Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern).
Ability to travel up to 20%.
Preferred
Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent).
HR certification (SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or equivalent).
Experience supporting client-facing, multi-site, or service-based business models.
Experience leveraging AI‑enabled tools or automation to improve HR processes or efficiency.
