Job Description

Role Description

Symetra’s Investment Accounting and Reporting team is looking for a dynamic leader to take ownership of data governance, quality, controls, and automation across our investment reporting ecosystem. As the Data Oversight Manager, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring data used for GAAP, Statutory, and management reporting is accurate, consistent, and audit‑ready - supporting a diverse investment portfolio.

You’ll lead the evolution of our data governance framework, strengthen key data quality and reconciliation controls, and drive automation and process improvement using modern tools like Power BI, Alteryx, Snowflake, SharePoint, and Cadency. Partnering closely with Accounting, Reporting, IT/Data, Internal Audit, Investments, and external vendors, you’ll help reduce risk, improve efficiency, and enable confident, well‑controlled financial reporting.

What you will do

  • Lead data governance for Investment Accounting and Reporting, defining standards, lineage, and critical data elements
  • Own data quality monitoring, controls, and exception management, driving systematic and automated validations
  • Oversee end‑to‑end reconciliations across investment systems and the general ledger, ensuring timely, accurate, and well‑documented GAAP, Statutory, and management reporting
  • Govern and optimize workflows across Power BI, Alteryx, Snowflake, SharePoint, and Cadency, including documentation, version control, and compliance
  • Ensure the integrity of data used in GAAP and Statutory filings (including Blue Book and Green Book schedules), executive reporting, and management dashboards
  • Drive automation of data transformations, reconciliations, and report production to improve efficiency and reduce risk
  • Build and maintain audit‑ready documentation, including process narratives, control descriptions, data dictionaries, and data flow diagrams
  • Partner closely with Investment Accounting, Reporting, Accounting Policy, Actuarial, Investments, and IT/Data teams
  • Coordinate internal and external audit and regulatory responses with confidence and clarity
  • Lead, coach, and develop team members while championing continuous improvement initiatives
  • Review analytics and dashboards to ensure accuracy, consistency, and usability
  • Lead special data governance initiatives and system enhancements as needed

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (required), plus a BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Advanced degree and/or CPA, CIA, CISA, CFA, or FRM strongly preferred
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in investment accounting, financial data governance, controllership, or financial reporting
  • Hands‑on experience implementing or managing automation and reporting tools such as Power BI, Alteryx, and Snowflake
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and Statutory accounting for investments preferred
  • Proven experience with data governance frameworks, data quality controls, lineage documentation, or financial system administration
  • Familiarity with Clearwater is a plus
  • Strong analytical, technical, and documentation skills with a high attention to detail
  • Clear, confident communicator and effective collaborator across Finance, Investments, Actuarial, IT/Data teams, and third‑party vendors
  • Some minimal annual travel required (for people manager roles only)

Benefits

  • Flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements
  • Plan for your future with our 401(k) plan and take advantage of immediate vesting and company matching up to 6%
  • Paid time away including vacation and sick time, flex days and ten paid holidays
  • Give back to your community and double your impact through our company matching
