Ready to lead innovation and shape scalable solutions? Symetra is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to drive technology excellence and mentor future leaders.
About the role
In this role, you will define and drive the technical vision of Benefits Engineering. You will contribute to the growth of company intellectual property, coach and mentor engineers across the organization, drive architecture for critical products and provide leadership for communities and advisory groups within the organization.
What You will Do
- Leverage existing and new products and technologies to architect loosely coupled, cloud native, secure, high-quality, and performant solutions for complex business problems that span multiple development teams
- Champion AI and innovative thinking, evaluating new technologies, platforms and defining technology roadmaps.
- Define design patterns and approach and practice for design reviews, impacting the organization.
- Define and oversee implementation of security and performance standards, leading implementation of information security, disaster recovery, and capacity standards.
- Review and approve Technical Partner agreements and ensure compliance with security, disaster recovery, performance standards, logging and monitoring and issue prevention.
- Define code merge and code versioning strategies and policies including automated build strategy and patterns
- Coach and mentor engineers and provide leadership for communities and advisory groups across the organization.
- Partner with technical leaders across Symetra to shape technical vision while advancing cost efficiency and optimization efforts

Compensation
Salary Range: $188,500 – $314,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program
Who You Are
- 15+ years of cumulative, relevant experience in software development and architect roles.
- Proven record of architecting and developing software solutions in multiple technology domains and have a deep understanding of the industry.
- Passionate about building secure, scalable, and performant applications, with expertise in software system architecture.
- Recognized as a technical leader whose knowledge, ideas, and critical thinking impact the organization.
- Uses extensive knowledge of theories and practices, and is a key influencer in product research, product innovation, and growth strategies.
- Able to articulate and share information with executive leadership, adapting communication style and gaining consensus to get results.
- Expert knowledge of architecture patterns around AI, distributed systems, AWS/cloud technologies and full stack development.
- Skilled in building high-performance, low-latency, secure, and scalable applications.
- Previous experience in a regulated industry handling sensitive data is a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent experience required. Bachelor’s degree or higher education preferred.
- Some travel required.
Travel:
- Required Training & Professional Development All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra’s corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
