About Futures Without Violence and the Project

Futures Without Violence (FUTURES) is a national nonprofit that provides groundbreaking programs, policies, and campaigns that empower individuals and organizations working to end violence against women and children around the world. Our vision is a future without violence that provides education, safety, justice and hope.

The Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights provides education and resources designed to enhance attorneys and advocates in their work supporting survivors in accessing state and local employment protections. This internship offers a unique opportunity to engage at the intersection of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and sexual harassment, the access to justice gap, and employment law.

Internship Purpose and Goals

The intern will support implementation of the Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights project by:

  • Conducting legal research on state employment protections relevant to survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Assisting in development of guides, templates, and tools (e.g. for advocates, workplaces, survivors).
  • Supporting planning and logistics of webinars, learning communities, and other training events.
  • Engaging in outreach, resource dissemination, and engagement activities.
  • Contributing to strategy and problem solving within the project team.

By the end of the internship, the intern should deepen knowledge of employment protections for survivors, strengthen advocacy and communications skills, and contribute substantively to advancing this work. As an intern with the Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights Project, the intern will have opportunities to build their professional network.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on interests, skills, and project needs, responsibilities may include:

  • Legal/policy research (requests for information from state agencies, case law, statutes, regulations, administrative rules) on relevant topics (e.g. leave laws, employment discrimination, reasonable accommodations, workplace stalking, retaliation)
  • Comparative review of state statutes or state guides on employment rights
  • Drafting or editing resource materials, toolkits, infographics, FAQs, checklists
  • Supporting the design, coordination, and promotion of webinars, training events, or learning exchanges
  • Outreach and partnership support (e.g. compiling interest holder lists, preparing briefing memos, assisting with communications)
  • Participating actively in team meetings
  • Proposing ideas for strategy and solutions to problems or challenges.
