Job Description
Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Life Vendor Data Analyst!
About the role
The Life Vendor Data Analyst supports the Vendor Management team by ensuring accurate vendor billing, reconciling invoices to contracted rates and underwriting requirements, and producing timely leadership reporting. This role uses business intelligence and analytics tools to identify trends, patterns, and cost drivers, and to deliver insights that inform operational and strategic decisions. In addition, the analyst provides day-to-day operational support to Life Underwriting, New Business Operations, and Distribution Partners, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and service level performance.
What you'll do in this role
- Vendor Invoicing, Reconciliation & Expense Reporting: Oversee daily invoice intake and workflow management. Review monthly vendor invoices and audit charges for adherence to contracted rates and terms. Perform billing reconciliation; identify discrepancies, calculate deductions/adjustments, and determine final amounts due. Initiate payment processing in accordance with established controls and timelines. Maintain expense tracking and produce recurring leadership reports on spend, variances, and key drivers. Analyze invoicing trends to validate appropriateness of submitted expenses and proactively identify savings opportunities (annual vendor budget > $8M).
- Operational Vendor Support & Service Level Monitoring: Validate rate reasonableness and confirm billed rates match contracted rates on submitted invoices. Reconcile invoice charges to expected underwriting activity (e.g., APS/labs ordered, age/amount, and underwriting requirements) and resolve exceptions. Maintain accurate records and data in required systems to support management reporting and decision-making. Support development and tracking of vendor service level metrics; contribute to executive reporting packages. Review vendor contracts and rate schedules as needed to support reconciliation and reporting.
- Data Enablement & Vendor Management Dashboarding: Normalize and transform invoice data for consistent reporting (e.g., standardizing formats, vendor line items, and policy-level mapping). Combine invoice data with policy and underwriting data sources (e.g., nbA, MRAS, Alitheia) to enable “life-of-policy” and cost-to-serve analytics. Support ingestion/connection of recurring Excel-based data into Snowflake and Power BI to improve automation and data quality. Build and enhance monitoring, trending, and control reports that highlight unit cost, vendor performance, and expense-to-revenue insights. Drive continuous refinement of dashboard definitions, documentation, and data integrity checks.
- Underwriting Analysis & Trend Reporting: Perform analysis of underwriting operations and outcomes (e.g., cycle time, approval/decline patterns, requirement ordering behaviors, guideline usage). Identify emerging patterns and shifts that impact risk selection, operational performance, and vendor demand. Translate findings into clear, actionable insights for underwriting and vendor management leadership.
