Role Description
Reporting to the Deputy CFO, the Assistant Controller leads a three-person general ledger and tax team, overseeing cash flow, general ledger activity, and financial reporting for APA and its affiliated real estate entities (APA Ten G, APA 750, and the Conference Center). The role includes managing audits, tax filings, and financial statements across multiple entities, supervising staff accountants, and overseeing a contracted accounting service provider.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's in accounting or Finance with accounting concentration
- CPA required
- 12+ years of accounting experience including general ledger management and financial reporting
- Strong understanding of nonprofit financial operations and compliance
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting standards
- Strong analytical skills and experience with lease accounting and depreciation schedules
- Proven experience supervising or mentoring a small accounting team
- Ability to train and guide staff on accounting policies and procedures
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Experience compiling/reviewing data, preparing reports, and contributing to financial analysis
- Trusted to handle sensitive financial information with discretion and professionalism
- Excellent Excel skills and ability to design and maintain accounting reports using Jet Reporting
- Proficient in accounting software and knowledge of technology and systems integration
Requirements
- Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and year-end general ledger closures for APA
- Plans, assigns, reviews, and approves work of staff accountants
- Manages cash flow, cash transfers, and the line of credit
- Maintains bank account setup and signature authority
- Ensures proper internal controls and manages compliance with debt covenants
- Responsible for the accounting and reporting for the LLCs
- Oversees external contracted accountants
- Responsible for APA consolidated financial statements and tax return preparation
- Manage the 401k audit and 5500 filing
- Interact with audit and tax consultants, IRS, and DC regulators
- Maintain the Finance Policies & Procedures Manual
