Role Description
This is a technical staff position supporting advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) implementation in STEM (especially computational disciplines) at Chaminade and in partnering Hawai'i-Pacific colleges and universities who are part of the NSF Strengthening the Cyberinfrastructure Professionals Ecosystem (SCIPE) Cyberinfrastructure Pacific Professionals (CPP) network grant award #2417946. The position will focus on facilitating student, faculty and stakeholder engagement with:
- Software engineering and deployment
- Cloud computing and cloud data infrastructure
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications
- Data analytics and visualization
- Science gateways
- High Performance Computing (HPC)
The position will contribute to the development of Hawai'i-Pacific capacity in this field to advance regional progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The CROS will develop and implement education and training opportunities (courses, certifications and workshops) that promote student, faculty and stakeholder engagement with CI techniques. The CROS will mentor student internships and research projects, including summer programs. As part of the SCIPE: CPP Hawai'i-Pacific Community of Practice for CI, the CROS will be a founding member of a network of professionals building capacity for CI in Hawai'i and Pacific island 2- and 4-year institutions. In this role, the ACRES will provide technical assistance and collaborate on the design and delivery of upskilling and certification programs for faculty, students, and working professionals in the region. This position is funded completely by funds received from NSF and other extramural funding programs. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program and/or operational needs of the University and the availability of grant funds.
Qualifications
- BS in Data Science or Computer Science, or BS in relevant technology focused/educational discipline.
- Experience in workshop development for diverse participants including no code or low code entrants into data science or CI (Preferred).
- Experience mentoring no code/low code entrants or students in computational training experiences (Preferred).
- Experience developing collaborations and partnerships between Hawai'i or Pacific island institutions and organizations (Preferred).
- MS with experience in the areas of software engineering and deployment, cloud computing/cloud data infrastructure, AI/ML, data visualization or Master’s level degree in technology training/education (Preferred).
- Experience in data analytics, data sharing, dissemination, and the development of data products and pipelines (Preferred).
Requirements
- Advanced Software Engineering and Deployment Skills
- Proficiency in one or more higher-level programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, MATLAB, R, or C/C++.
- Experience in software development best practices, including version control (e.g., GitHub), code reviews, and continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
- Ability to develop understanding of frameworks and technologies like Node.js, React, and AWS Amplify.
- Developing experience in developing, testing, and deploying software solutions supporting complex, large-scale scientific and research applications.
- Experience with cloud service providers such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, with hands-on experience in deploying, configuring, and managing cloud-based servers, databases, and services.
- Prior exposure to cloud-based data lakes and data warehousing solutions, including ETL pipelines and the cloud hosting of downstream data products.
- Ability to develop facility with cloud-native technologies (e.g., containers, Kubernetes) and serverless architectures, with experience in scalable infrastructure management.
- Prior experience using one or more AI/ML areas, such as Deep Learning, NLP, unsupervised and supervised learning, reinforcement learning, multimodal learning, ensemble methods, scalable online estimation, and probabilistic graphical models.
- Ability to develop, train, and deploy AI/ML models in production environments, including cloud-based machine learning pipelines and scalable AI solutions.
- Exposure to AI/ML frameworks and libraries, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn.
- Experience in the data analysis and visualization tooling ecosystem, including computational notebooks such as Jupyter and/or R Markdown and visualization frameworks such as Matplotlib, Plotly, Plotly Dash, Shiny, and D3.js.
- Experience in developing and deploying interactive dashboards and visualization tools that support data-driven decision-making in scientific research and other domains.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex use case requirements into data and analytics pipelines to support actionable insights and the development of downstream data products.
- Prior exposure to science gateways, with an understanding of user needs for complex scientific applications (Desirable).
- Familiarity with HPC resource management and the integration of HPC systems with cloud and AI workflows (Desirable).
- Experience in developing and leading initiatives that build cyberinfrastructure capacity (Desirable).
- Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including academic institutions, government agencies, and international organizations (Desirable).
- Prior experience designing and implementing data science or computer science workshops, short courses and training modules for diverse participants (Desirable).

Other Requirements
- Must have a valid Driver’s License.
- This is a part-time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule.
- Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
- The position may incorporate remote working and travel/temporary deployment to partner research/training sites on the US continent.
- Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University.
- Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Some holiday or weekend work may be required.
