This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a high-performing Investigations Team in a mission-driven environment focused on advancing accountability and transparency. You will manage and mentor investigators, oversee complex, high-impact investigations, and collaborate across legal, communications, and partnerships teams to ensure investigations inform broader organizational strategies. The position requires a strategic thinker with proven leadership experience, exceptional project management skills, and the ability to translate investigative findings into actionable insights. You will help shape investigative approaches, innovate in research methods, and ensure operational excellence while fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture. This is a remote-first role with occasional travel and a chance to contribute meaningfully to public-interest work.

  • Set the strategic direction of the Investigations Team, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and proactive response to emerging issues.
  • Oversee investigations from conception through execution, guiding the team in synthesizing complex data into actionable insights.
  • Collaborate with legal, communications, and partnerships departments to design investigations that support litigation and public education efforts.
  • Review and approve investigative outputs, ensuring quality, accuracy, and strategic alignment.
  • Identify and implement tools, systems, and processes to enhance investigative efficiency, coordination, and impact.
  • Provide mentorship, professional development, and performance oversight for investigators and senior investigators, fostering a culture of accountability and high-impact work.
  • Represent the organization in high-level external engagements, elevating visibility and credibility of investigative initiatives.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience conducting and leading complex investigations, including investigative research, journalism, congressional oversight, or related fields.
  • 3+ years of experience managing teams, directing investigative work, and mentoring early-career investigators.
  • Proven track record of high-impact investigations that advance accountability, inform litigation, or influence policy.
  • Proficiency with FOIA or state-level public records laws and experience using open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools.
  • Strong people management skills to lead and develop a high-performing team in an inclusive and collaborative environment.
  • Exceptional project management, communication, and strategic thinking skills to balance multiple investigations and rapidly evolving priorities.
  • Technologically proficient, with experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, AirTable, and file-sharing platforms.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and experience contributing to mission-driven, public-interest work.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; experience in nonprofit, remote-first, or hybrid organizations is a plus.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range: $130,000 - $150,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Remote-first work environment with occasional travel for team meetings and retreats.
  • Generous health, dental, and vision benefits, with 80% of premiums covered.
  • Retirement plan with matching contributions.
  • Remote office reimbursements for personal devices and connectivity.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth.
  • Inclusive, mission-driven workplace with a strong emphasis on collaboration and impact.
