Role Description
The Crime and Justice Institute (CJI), a division of Community Resources for Justice, Inc., is seeking a Communications Specialist to help elevate the organization’s national visibility as a leader in justice policy and implementation. The Communications Specialist will help develop high-quality content that advances CJI’s communications, branding, and marketing goals. The ideal candidate for this position is a self-directed professional who can operate independently, work with teams and subject matter experts, and apply excellent writing skills to translate technical, complex information into clear, compelling content and visual materials. The position is part-time to start with the potential of turning into a full-time position. This position is central to CJI’s communications efforts, supporting content creation and design, analytics, and performance tracking to help guide and refine our work.
- Produce high-quality written and visual content for CJI’s website, newsletters, social media, publications, and multimedia channels.
- Develop, author, and publish compelling written and multimedia content for CJI’s website, newsletters, social channels, video scripts, media outreach, and other distribution channels.
- Collaborate with project teams and subject matter experts to translate technical research, policy, and program information into accessible, engaging narratives.
- Design graphics, infographics, and simple multimedia assets to support publications, campaigns, and events.
- Assist in planning and executing communications strategies for projects, publications, and events in alignment with CJI’s messaging and brand.
- Monitor engagement on digital channels (social media, newsletters, website).
- Track basic performance metrics and provide insights to the Communications Team and Leadership Team.
- Recommend small adjustments to content, timing, or format based on audience response.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of experience in a communications role, ideally including nonprofit or mission-driven communications and marketing.
- Knowledge of emerging digital communications tools, including AI.
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical information into clear, engaging content.
- Experience tracking, analyzing, and reporting on key performance metrics (website and social media analytics) and translating data into actionable improvements.
- Exceptional writing skills, including copy editing and proofreading.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to the highest quality work.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a variety of people, both in person and virtually.
- Self-directed, able to prioritize workload effectively within a part-time schedule.
- Experience with basic graphic design tools such as Canva.
Requirements
- Bonus Skills (preferred but not required):
- Advanced graphic design tools (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator).
- Experience with website content management tools (e.g., WordPress).
- Familiarity with public/media relations best practices.
- Interest in justice policy and practice.
Education
- Relevant bachelor’s degree or five or more years of experience in the field.
