Position Summary
This Base Building and Communications Manager is a critical part of the Race Forward's H.E.A.L. Together (Honest Education Action & Leadership) program and Race Forward Action's HEAL To Win and other Movement Building programs. The Base Building and Communications Manager reports to the Race Forward VP of Movement Building.
This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit, and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining.
Duties and Responsibilities
Digital Organizing and Narrative Strategies (60%)
- Work with partners to build Race Forward Action (RFA)'s base of supporters using efficient and optimized email, digital advertising, and SMS campaigns via RFA's CRM & integrated tools (e.g. Action Network + Zoom, Mobilize)
- Strategic engagement to create online entry points for Movement Building's organizing initiatives including Public School Strong to build a community of supporters and potential volunteers.
- Recruit and train volunteers to help organize to build and promote Movement Building programs, strategic initiatives and campaigns.
- Lead the planning, creation, and coordination of digital content – including web, social, graphics, ads, etc. – for PSS and other MB organizing, narrative and advocacy programs, initiatives and campaigns.
- Lead the planning and coordination of PSS communication partners and all weekly emails to stakeholders and monthly newsletters to PSS members and supporters.
- This position will participate in the broader HEAL Communications team in to support developing content, on promotion and build engagement in all HEAL online events and workshops engage in the news cycle, and collaborate interdepartmentally and with partner organizations.
Data Management: (25%)
- Develop and execute implementation plan for RFA's Control Shift digital organizing platform and Action Network email program and work with RF Tech team on integrating with data systems.
- Help train team, partners and volunteers on digital tools and strategies with Control Shift digital organizing platform.
Organization-wide responsibilities (15%)
- Participate in all grassroots fundraising campaigns and maintain a portfolio of individual and organizational prospects for solicitation.
- Participate in cross-department committees and teams.
- Rotating meeting facilitation and note taking.
- Provide support and participation for organization-wide and regional campaigns and events.
- Provide support on other data and administrative needs to the Senior Organizing Director, including, but not limited to, scheduling, managing contracts and payments to speakers and consultants, and organizing digital files.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of the elements of Race Forward's mission, vision, and theory of change.
- Strong understanding of digital engagement, community organizing, strategic communications and narrative change..
- Ability to energize, inspire, and move people, organizations, and communities to take action.
- Excellent public speaking, facilitation, and training skills, with a reliable ability to explain race-explicit content and synthesize and translate complex concepts.
- Clear understanding of the work, struggles, and equity challenges of organizers and communicators.
- Intuitive ability to build and maintain relationships with key players in the political and narrative landscape.
- Excellent project management skills
- Excellent facilitation, training, and teaching skills
- Ability to learn and utilize digital engagement applications and data systems.
- Desire to explore the complexities and dilemmas inherent in operationalizing racial justice
- Open to experimentation, learning, and adjustments along the way
- Ability to work independently and think creatively about how to leverage the resources at your disposal.
- Adaptability, perseverance, and a sense of humor
Qualifications and Experience
- Three or more years of experience leading community or political organizing efforts and/or educational advocacy.
- At least one year of experience of designing and training facilitating.
- Excellent ability to track and maintain data, re: leadership development and base building with youth, community, and educator union leaders and organizers.
- Excellent attention to detail and follow‐through.
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Comfortable with an insider strategy working closely and in partnership with decision makers.
- Strong commitment to social justice, racial justice, and empowerment of leaders from most impacted communities.
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and a variety of applications.

- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 5% time, facilitating workshops, convenings, and representing Race Forward at various meetings and conferences
