Job Title: Director of Procurement & Pricing – DrayageEmployment Type: Full-Time
Position Overview
A transportation and logistics organization is seeking a Director of Procurement & Pricing to own carrier sourcing, cost structure, and pricing strategy across its drayage and intermodal network. This is a high-impact role responsible for ensuring every move is sourced correctly, priced accurately, and executed without margin erosion.
This is not a reporting or analytical role. The position requires a hands-on operator who understands port dynamics, accessorial risk, and real-world execution across high-volume container flows.
The role sits at the intersection of procurement, pricing, and operations, directly influencing profitability and service reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Procurement Leadership• Build and manage a high-performing carrier network across major U.S. port markets
• Source capacity across regions including NY/NJ, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, and other key ports
• Evaluate carriers based on cost, service reliability, compliance, and consistency
• Negotiate rates with asset-based carriers and owner-operators
Pricing & Margin Management
• Own lane-level pricing strategy for import and export container drayage moves
• Develop pricing structures accounting for linehaul, chassis usage, detention, demurrage, and port-related fees
• Protect and improve gross margin across all freight movements
• Identify pricing inefficiencies and correct underperforming lanes or accounts
Operational Alignment
• Partner with dispatch and operations to ensure pricing reflects real execution costs
• Step in on high-risk or problem shipments where margin or service is at risk
• Develop SOPs to reduce accessorial leakage and operational errors
Strategy & Optimization
• Analyze trends across ports, lanes, and customer segments
• Build scalable pricing frameworks to replace reactive quoting
• Support leadership in improving overall network profitability
• Identify gaps where pricing or procurement strategy is misaligned with market conditions
Requirements
• Strong understanding of container flow from port to warehouse
• Hands-on experience in carrier procurement, rate negotiation, and pricing strategy
• Deep knowledge of accessorials including detention, demurrage, chassis splits, and per diem
• Understanding of port operations, congestion patterns, and capacity constraints
• Ability to operate independently and build processes in an unstructured environment
• Strong commercial mindset with focus on margin protection and cost control
• Experience working cross-functionally with operations, dispatch, and leadership teams

- 5 to 7 plus years of experience in drayage, intermodal logistics, or port-based transportation
