Job Description
The School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a Finance Generalist to join the team that supports the School of Medicine Dean’s Office units. We are looking for someone who is analytical, enjoys problem solving, is attentive to detail, and wants to be part of a team.
This key team member will manage a variety of both analytical and transactional activities, including:
- Advising units within the Dean’s office on financial policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Overseeing and evaluating the proposed unit budgets.
- Analyzing, on a monthly basis, unit performance relative to budget.
- Understanding the complexity of various fund sources and providing guidance on appropriate fund utilization.
- Reviewing and approving both expense and revenue transactions and account certifications, as well as updating payroll accounting and monitoring suspense.
- Analyzing and/or transacting select, specialized activities that are more complex or specialized in nature.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in the use of Workday, Anaplan, and Qlik so as to be a resource for folks in the Dean’s Office units
As part of this role, a critical responsibility is synthesizing the unit information and reporting opportunities and risks up to School of Medicine senior leadership. This is a great opportunity to interact with senior leaders and learn more about the various operational areas within the School of Medicine Dean’s Office. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a complex setting with a variety of financial leaders across the Dean’s Office operations.
Applicants must be highly organized and have excellent analytical and numerical ability, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to record and report financial and budget data clearly and accurately, set and adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines. A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have prior experience with financial operations management at UVA that includes demonstrated independence and analytical skill, and who are agile in using University financial reporting tools such as Workday and Qlik, and Anaplan as used in the School of Medicine.
The salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This is a remote eligible position with a preference for someone who is able to be in Charlottesville, VA up to six times a year with exact number to be determined. Work hours are 8 am to 5 pm EST.

Finance Generalist Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Experience: Two plus years of relevant professional experience required.
Preferred: Professional experience in an academic setting.
